Position OverviewThis position instructs middle school athletes in fundamental skills, strategy and physical training required for individual and team success. The employee must understand and abide by all building, Tacoma School District and Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA) policies, regulations, procedures and guidelines.
Essential Job Functions- Supervises student athletes to promote effective student learning through participation in athletic activities.
- Plans, develops and implements an effective program, prepares athletes physically and mentally, formulates behavioral objectives, administers discipline fairly, emphasizes safety, provides opportunities for success, shares information with parents, informs participants of district policies and agreements.
- Organizes practice sessions that are stimulating and instructive; conducts practice with 7th and 8th grade teams four days a week and 6th grade teams two days a week after school.
- Assumes responsibility for all phases of the program including coordination of facility use with the building athletic director; manages budgeting and purchasing through ASB; handles injuries; records injuries; maintains injury records.
- Informs students and parents of eligibility procedures and rules; posts and issues rules.
- Establishes an effective system for issuing and maintaining equipment records, ensures return, cleaning, storage; performs weekly safety checks; holds students responsible; completes inventory lists.
- Makes written recommendations to the building athletic director regarding program, facilities and transportation; assists in achieving objectives of the school athletic program.
Job Duties
- Attends all district and building athletic meetings as called.
- Updates knowledge by attending clinics, workshops, staying current with rule changes adopted by WIAA and Tacoma School District.
- Performs related duties as assigned.
Work with students in outdoor playing fields, indoor and outdoor courts, gymnasium, swimming pool or other sports facility; physical ability to lift and move sports equipment and demonstrate sports skills when necessary; may be exposed to infectious diseases and inclement weather.
Minimum Qualifications- High school graduation or equivalent; minimum two years of experience as an assistant coach.
- At least 21 years of age (WIAA Regulation) or equivalent experience and training that provides the required knowledge, skills and ability.
Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be evaluated by the Human Resources department for comparability.
Licenses /Special Requirements
First Aid Certificate and CPR card are required.
