This position is not benefits eligible.
Responsibilities- Supervises assistant coaches and student athletes to promote effective learning through athletic participation.
- Plans, develops and implements an effective program, prepares athletes physically and mentally, administers discipline, emphasizes safety, provides opportunities for success and schedules preseason meetings with parents.
- Organizes practice sessions that develop athletes’ greatest potential, teaches fundamental skills, maintains records and promotes good sportsmanship.
- Coordinates facility use, follows procedures for budgeting, procurement, injury handling, and transportation with the athletic director.
- Informs students and parents of eligibility rules, posts rules and issues them to each participant.
- Establishes an effective system for issuing equipment, maintaining records, performs safety checks, holds students responsible for lost equipment, completes inventory lists.
- Issues letters and awards, makes written recommendations to the building athletic director regarding program, facilities and transportation problems, assists in achieving the objectives of the school athletic program.
Job Duties
- Attends all district and building athletic meetings as called by the building athletic director and/or district athletic director.
- Updates knowledge by attending clinics, workshops and keeping current with WIAA rule changes.
- Performs related duties as assigned.
Work with students in outdoor playing fields, indoor and outdoor courts, gymnasium, swimming pool or other sports facilities; physical ability to lift and move sports equipment; may be exposed to infectious diseases and inclement weather.
Minimum QualificationsEducation and Experience
Graduation from high school or equivalent and a minimum of three years of experience as an assistant coach; must be at least 21 years of age (WIAA regulation); or any combination of experience and training which provides the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and ability required to perform the work.
Licenses/Special Requirements
First Aid Certificate, CPR card and AED training are required.
Red Cross Safety Training or Lifeguard certification is also required for swimming, diving and water polo coaches.
Knowledge,Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of building, Tacoma School District and WIAA policies, regulations, procedures and guidelines.
- Knowledge of effective coaching practices/techniques for the particular sport.
- Ability to comply with WIAA coaching standards and motivate students.
- Ability to exercise fairness in dealing with student athletes and conduct oneself ethically.
- Ability to plan, organize, coordinate athletic activities and maintain accurate records.
