The City of Tacoma is creating a new civil service position for an Apprentice Wire Electrician. Apprentices assist journey‑level Wire Electricians in the construction, maintenance, and repair of electrical substations and underground electrical systems. The apprenticeship is recognized by the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers and requires a minimum of three and a half years to complete. Apprentices must attend off‑hour training without compensation and meet the progress standards set by the Joint Apprenticeship Training Committee.

Responsibilities
  • Assist journeymen in the assembly, installation, and maintenance of electrical equipment.
  • Perform duties such as lifting, pulling, pushing, kneeling, squatting, climbing stairs and ladders, and working from heights and in confined spaces.
  • Work under the supervision of the senior Wire Electrician and follow all safety regulations and procedures.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid Washington State driver’s license.
  • Completion of high‑school level algebra with knowledge of basic electricity (Ohm’s Law, AC/DC theory, series/parallel circuits).
  • At least 6 months of experience in the electrical or construction trades, or completion of a formal vocational training program in a related field.
Licenses, Certificates and Other Requirements
  • Obtain a valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) permit within 6 months of hire and a Class A CDL by the end of the probationary period.
  • Complete traffic‑control flagging training before the probationary period.
  • Obtain First Aid/CPR certification before the probationary period.
  • Complete forklift training and obtain the certificate before the probationary period.
  • Obtain a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) clearance prior to probation completion.

Compensation & Benefits

Hourly Rate: $54.84 – $64.43. Employees receive the City of Tacoma benefits package.
