Summary

The Advanced Practice Registered Nurse - Nurse Practitioner Resident Faculty position will work in Primary Care as a .5 FTE and as an AGNP Faculty the other .5 FTE.

Duties
  • Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) Certified Nurse Practitioner (NP) Residency Faculty provides care and counseling of persons or in the promotion and maintenance of health and prevention of illness and injury based upon the nursing process which includes systematic data gathering - assessment - appropriate nursing judgment - and evaluation of human responses to actual or potential health problems through such services as case finding - health teaching - health counseling
  • provision of care supportive to or restorative of life and well-being
  • and executing medical regimens including administering medications and treatments prescribed by a licensed or otherwise legally authorized provider
  • The nurse's primary commitment is to the patient - whether an individual - family - group - or community (ANA Code of Ethics for Nurses)
  • The Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) Certified Nurse Practitioner (NP) Residency Faculty practices in various service lines to provide a full range of services emphasizing quality - timeliness - and the advancement of the Veterans Affairs (VA) mission
  • The NP provides advanced clinical practice - consultation - and management
  • The NP Residency Faculty practices to the full extent of their education - training - and certification
  • Core functions are outlined in the clinical privileges that correspond with this position
  • The NP has prescriptive authority for their assigned patients or program as indicated by their position
  • This position is part of a funded program through the VA Office of Academic Affiliations
  • The program includes funding for faculty - program director - and NP residents stipends for NP post graduates selected for a one-year (1) guided residency program
  • The program's goal is to enhance learning opportunities for advanced practice nurses in the underserved population of adult and geriatric care in the veteran population
  • The Faculty mentors/precepts NP students and NP residents on-site at the DC VA and support the strategic plans of both the Washington DC VA and the Catholic University of America Affiliate to advance the role of professional nursing on the interdisciplinary team and provide meaningful clinical opportunities in the veterans' health care system (VHA) that add to the nursing workforce caring for this population
  • The position requires a flexible schedule and assignments to meet the needs of a 24/7 hospital and the university academic calendar
  • The incumbent must be poised and articulate when communicating with people of varied educational and ethnic backgrounds
  • Willing to work cooperatively as a member of a team in all assignments
  • Care for the veteran is their priority in the work/clinical setting - and they demonstrate customer service principles in all aspects of work
  • Self-motivated in the pursuit of meeting professional work standards
  • FUNCTIONS OF ASSIGNED DUTIES:
    The NP is a licensed independent practitioner with advanced education and national certification who provides evidence-based care for a population of patients
  • Major duties and responsibilities of the position:
    Independently manages a panel of patients with acute and chronic health conditions with an emphasis on health promotion and disease prevention using evidence-based practice
  • Develops and implements an individualized plan to achieve optimal population health and disease management
  • Demonstrates leadership and works collaboratively with Primary Care Team and other interdisciplinary team members
  • Orders and interprets labs - tests - and diagnostic studies
  • Prescribes pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic interventions
  • Initiates referrals and consults to specialty services
  • Provides education to patients and their families
  • Assess and adjusts the plan of care as needed to achieve optimal patient outcomes
