Position Overview

The City of Tacoma’s Environmental Services Department offers exciting opportunities for entry‑level and experienced engineers to join our Capital Delivery Team. The team designs and delivers diverse, challenging engineering projects across wastewater, stormwater, and solid waste utilities, supported by an annual $30M average capital budget.
Capital Delivery GroupThe Group works on a wide variety of complex municipal infrastructure projects, including civil, environmental, electrical, and mechanical disciplines. Projects include wastewater treatment plant improvements, storm sewer pipe upgrades, pump station upgrades, building upgrades, and green infrastructure.

Selected applicants will work in the Center for Urban Waters facility adjacent to Tacoma’s Thea Foss Waterway in downtown Tacoma, collaborating with engineers, scientists, and technicians.
Primary Responsibilities- Perform full‑cycle project management for multi‑million‑dollar capital projects from planning through construction.
- Prepare technical specifications, calculations, engineering designs, and plans.
- Coordinate closely with stakeholders (public, private agencies, internal City units, and team members) to ensure successful project delivery.
- Monitor scope, schedule, budget, and workload of team members during design and construction.
- Manage specialty engineering consultants as needed.
- Perform engineering quality‑control reviews of work products, technical reports, letters, plans, specifications, cost estimates, and as‑built drawings.
- Associate Civil Engineer: Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or related field.
- Senior Associate Civil Engineer: Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or related field; 2 years of engineering‑related experience or possession of Washington State EIT. Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or related field; 4 years of progressively responsible professional‑level engineering experience.
- Civil Engineer, PE: Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or related field; 4 years of professional‑level engineering experience;

Desired QualificationsEducation or experience with civil engineering design and project management, specifically in stormwater and wastewater collection systems, wastewater treatment plants, pump stations, green stormwater infrastructure, roadway design, and solid waste facility management.
- Analysis: Use data to assess issues, evaluate options, and reach conclusions.
- Research: Identify, collect, organize, and document data; compile and maintain reports and records.
- Leadership: Establish and maintain effective working relationships; lead small to large teams.
- Problem Solving: Apply intelligence, common sense, and expertise to resolve challenging issues.
- Communications Effectiveness: Communicate verbally and in writing; produce reports, presentations, and maintain productive relationships.
- Professionalism: Conduct all assignments professionally, reliably, and with strong work ethic.
- Technical: Proficient in engineering practices; experience in complex design, technical specifications, cost estimates, and bid documents.
