Senior Hydro Operations Data Analyst

Position Description

Tacoma Power's Power Management division is looking for a Senior Hydro Operations Data Analyst to join the Resource Operations team.

The Resource Operations team is an integral part of the Power Management division, responsible for bringing affordable, reliable, and environmentally friendly power to customers. This mission‑critical role will direct the operations of our four hydroelectric projects and our BPA Slice contract while balancing flood control, river flows for downstream fisheries, hydro unit outages, and power production.

This position works collaboratively with the team’s wholesale energy traders to optimize the value of our resources and interaction with the wholesale market. It involves modeling and understanding portfolio constraints and quantifying trade‑offs among stakeholders such as Wholesale Trading, System Operations, Natural Resources, Engineering, Risk Management, and hydro plant staff.

• Support the team with scientific methods, processes, and algorithms to maintain and improve operational tools.
• Model near‑term and mid‑term operations and optimize Tacoma Power’s resource portfolio to maximize value, ensure reliability, and maintain compliance with regulatory, contractual, and license requirements.
• Develop and implement operations plans based on hydrologic conditions, market forecasts, load projections, and unit availability to support efficient resource dispatch and trading strategies.
• Provide guidance and technical expertise to wholesale trading, power scheduling, and operations staff; participate in daily and monthly strategy meetings to align near‑term and forward operations.
• Maintain, enhance, and utilize decision‑support tools and models to optimize water management, unit efficiency, and resource planning; monitor technological advancements to improve operational capabilities.
• Represent Power Management in internal and external meetings, coordinating generation and transmission outages, negotiating operational needs, and supporting cross‑departmental collaboration.
• Serve as subject‑matter expert and on‑call resource, including training staff, supporting BPA Slice contract operations, and contributing to forward sales and hedging strategies.

Minimum Education
:
Bachelor’s degree in engineering, economics, business, public administration, or a directly related field.

Minimum Experience
: 4 years of experience in electrical power operational modeling, trading, or quantitative analysis.

Relevant education and experience may substitute for one another on a year‑for‑year basis.

• Ability to provide technical expertise on a rotating 24/7 on‑call rotation.
• Strong investigative and exploratory skills.
• Experience with statistical modeling tools such as R or Python.
• Ability to present technical information clearly and concisely to a variety of stakeholders and leadership.

Hourly Rate: $54.60 - $76.88
