The Washington Virtual Academy (WAVA) is seeking highly qualified and motivated teachers to work in an innovative environment. Virtual academy teachers are part of our pioneering effort in public education. Our teachers should therefore share the school's pioneering mission, vision, and approach. At WAVA middle school, our teachers work in teams of two general education teachers - one teaching ELA/History and the other teaching Math/Science to their team of 110 students.
Teaching in a virtual academy requires a strong educational background and a firm understanding of how best practices from a regular classroom can be applied to our innovative model. Though we are primarily focused on academics, all of our teachers must be comfortable using technology and supporting new users of technology. Teachers work primarily from their homes.
As part of their regular teaching responsibilities, WAVA teachers will:
Instructional/Curricular
* Have a working knowledge of the K12 curriculum and Online School as it relates to their grade and subject level assignment - ELA/History or Math/Science.
* Be knowledgeable about Common Core State Standards
* Support parents with online school set up, curriculum and instructional issues
* Assign and evaluate student work per school policies
* Participate in the School Improvement Plan
* Develop effective instructional tools, lessons, and strategies to deliver core content live classes as well as intervention sessions based on student need
* Provide synchronous direct instruction through instructional technology
Communication
* Initiate, monitor, and document required home-school communications
* Conduct progress conferences to assess each student's learning, progress, learning style, and any other relevant academic, social, or developmental issues
* Respond within 24 hours to parent inquiries during regular work week
* Attend regularly scheduled face-to-face professional development days 4-5 times per year, and weekly online staff meetings
* Work collaboratively with other teachers in Professional Learning Communities to develop and deliver appropriate instruction to student to best meet individual needs
* Professionally and effectively communicate in writing to students, families, and staff
Records Management
* Develop and maintain appropriate documentation
* Alert leadership team of any concerns about student progress and attendance
* Manage online courses
* Complete semester and end of year report cards
Community
* Organize orientation, training, social, and educational activities for students and families
* Support students in school activities such as open houses, expos, information sessions, state assessments and orientations
Assessment/Evaluation
* Participate on IEP/RtI/504/SST teams for students as needed
* Work with the assessment team to communicate and prepare students for state assessments
* Provide instructional opportunities for students to prepare for state assessments
* Assess students per WAVA policy for all state and school wide assessments
Requirements:
* Hold a Bachelor's degree
* Master's degree preferred
* Appropriate state certification - multiple endorsement areas preferred
* 3+ years of teaching experience
* Shared view of the virtual academy's mission
* Strong content and subject-matter knowledge
* An ability to support and guide adults as well as students
* Strong written and verbal communication skills
* Organization and time-management skills
* Proficiency in MS Excel, MS Word, and Outlook, and experience using them in a professional capacity
Preferred Experience s:
* Experience working with students in Alternative Learning Environments
* Experience using a variety of web-based technology
* Experience using a student information system and/or other type of database
* An ability to support adults with basic computer set-up and navigation
SALARY
$200.00 per day
