Additional Information: This position requires completion and attaining of the state mandated General Para educator Certificate. The Para educator Certificate Program offers statewide standards-based training for all para educator/Education Support Professionals (ESP), and supports a career growth ladder for those who wish to advance their career as a para educator or pursue a teaching profession. Staff will be required to complete 28 hours of training on the Fundamental Course of Study provided by the district.

The first two days of FCS training will be required to be completed within four months of the date of hire, and the second two days within six months of the date of hire, or by September 1 of the next school year. The general certificate is then earned by a para educator who completes ten days (70 clock hours) of professional development training.

Other Notes: This position may require ASL communication for specified duties. The description below lists essential duties, responsibilities and qualifications as required by the district.

Responsibilities
  • Assist a certificated teacher with instructional and personal care needs for students with a broad range of disabilities, including medically fragile, orthopedically impaired, developmental, physical, and/or behavioral. Provide academic interventions and may include assisting students with activities of daily living.
  • Provide instruction to students individually or in small groups per teacher direction; support students with sensory or physical handicaps; maintain a safe instructional environment; assist with vocational training and job-related activities as assigned; encourage participation in learning activities.
  • Assist with self-care activities as needed; may assist with feeding, dressing, toileting, hygiene, and related tasks; monitor and respond to health needs as trained; administer and log medications as assigned by the licensed nurse or therapist.
  • Supervise students during recess, lunch, and transitions; assist with bus loading/unloading and transportation as needed; support classroom management and behavior expectations.
  • Record student progress, communicate with teachers/parents, maintain student records, and collect data for IEP goals and progress monitoring.
  • Adjust positioning for comfort and safety; utilize or supervise use of adaptive equipment; participate in field trips and related activities as required.
  • Prepare and serve meals/snacks when assigned; maintain clean dining areas; model positive behavior and conflict resolution; support adaptation of materials and activities for students with disabilities.
  • Assist in adapting materials, administer standardized tests as assigned, and facilitate use of specialized software/equipment; arrange classroom setup and accompany students on various activities as needed.
  • Participate in department staff meetings and communicate student information to the appropriate staff.
  • Operate and maintain adaptive equipment; coordinate classroom computer activities and schedule student access as needed.
  • Maintain reliable attendance and adhere to district policies regarding tardiness and absences.
  • Address concerns with appropriate staff and administration as appropriate.
Essential Job Functions

  • Instruct in self-care activities when required; assist with medical/health-related tasks as trained; respond to emergencies and seizures; monitor student comfort and safety.
  • Monitor and supervise students in various settings; assist with bus activities and field trips; manage and support student behavior per district guidelines.
  • Record progress and maintain communication with teachers and families; document data for IEP goals and behavioral plans.
  • Use adaptive equipment and sign language as appropriate; collaborate with therapies staff and specialists.
  • Demonstrate reliability and attendance; adhere to district expectations for professional conduct.
Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience: Associate degree or 72 credit hours of post-secondary education, or passing state test to demonstrate knowledge and ability to assist in instruction, plus one year of experience with individuals who have disabilities, or an equivalent combination that meets federal/state requirements.
