Position Hours And Pay
This position is for 6.5 hours per day at 168 days and 3.5 hours for 10 days for each school year, and 7 hours per day for 4 days for the first year and 2 days each year thereafter until certification is completed. Position pay: PSE Salary Schedule Level 5 - $24.76.

Required Training - Person hired for this position must also complete Right Response Training within 3-5 months of hire.
- Must successfully complete the Fundamental Course of Studies (FCS) and General Para educator Certificate of the state mandated Para educator Certificate Program per State requirements. Para educator Certificate Program is dependent upon State funding.
Interview Eligibility - In order to be considered for an interview for this instructional para educator position you must meet the following federal minimum employment requirements:
- Must be 18 years of age; and
- Hold high school diploma or its equivalent; and one of the following
- Successfully passed the ETS Para Pro test or Pearson Paraprofessional assessment
- AA degree or higher
- Earned seventy-two (72) quarter credits or forty-eight (48) semester credits at an accredited institution of higher education
- Completion of registered apprenticeship program offered by the Washington State Dept. of Labor & Industries
- Successful completion of The Master Teacher Inc. Para educator Online Training Program

Certification - Must complete Right Response Training and receive qualifications within 3-5 months. Renewal of Right Response certification must be completed annually prior to expiration date.
Description and ResponsibilitiesThis position's responsibilities are to assist certificated staff with instructional and non-instructional activities for non-mainstreamed special education students, generally in a self-contained classroom, including instructing students individually or in small groups, assisting students with basic life skills, and supervising student behavior activities.
Job Summary and Essential FunctionsEssential Duties
- Instruct moderately to severely handicapped students individually or in small groups in a variety of learning activities to promote understanding; provide encouragement, reinforcement and achievement of educational objectives; assist in administration of objective tests or other measurements.
- Communicate with certificated staff concerning individual student progress; adjust methods to meet diverse needs; consult on remediation or enrichment activities.
- Assist certificated staff in maintaining records, logs, charts, assignments and other records for assessment of student progress.
- Attend to student physical and safety needs; monitor for medical risks such as seizures and behaviors; correct behaviors and maintain discipline per policies.
- Assist students with toileting and personal hygiene as needed; assist with handwashing, dental care, and grooming.
- Assist students with interpersonal and personal skills; help feed students and teach social aspects of eating with others.
- Assist with basic living skills and pre-vocational activities; develop communication skills; facilitate integration with age-group peers where possible.
- Establish and maintain effective communication with students, staff and parents; monitor progress and safety; support community relations.
- Provide physical assistance as needed; use adaptive equipment; follow and document procedures established by the physical therapist.
- Monitor need for first aid and refer for treatment as appropriate.
- Maintain cleanliness and hygiene of classroom and equipment; manage routine cleaning tasks and laundry as applicable.
- Alert qualified district staff to student problems.
- Locate, prepare and modify materials for student use and enrichment under the direction of certificated staff.
- Prepare, duplicate, collate and distribute materials; operate basic office equipment.
- Maintain classroom appearance; manage and store equipment and supplies as assigned.
- May serve on district committees; model appropriate and confidential behavior per district guidelines.
