Job Details
Job Title: Recreation Assistant I
Department: Parks & Recreation
Reports To: Recreation Program Coordinator
Status: Part Time, Non-Exempt (Hourly)
Wage Scale: $10.40 - $12.58, DOE, typically hired at minimum rate
Close Date: Open until filled
Hours: Evenings and some Saturdays; hours can range from 0 up to 20 hrs per week depending on game schedules and needs
Position Summary:
This position is responsible for officiating and scorekeeping a variety of organized athletic events, including baseball/softball, basketball, flag football, street hockey, and soccer. Additional responsibilities include assisting with community center operations as needed and supporting youth camps by helping lead activities and working with participants.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Officiate a variety of organized athletic events.
- Serve as an advocate for rules and regulations while monitoring gameplay.
- Keep accurate score during games by operating scorekeeping devices and following proper procedures.
- Assist with setup and takedown of equipment and preparation of the playing field or activity area.
- Prioritize player safety and well-being at all events, addressing unsafe situations or inappropriate conduct by players, parents, or coaches.
- Maintain a positive and productive working environment, demonstrating cooperation with supervisors, coworkers, peers, and the public.
- Perform basic tasks around the community center to ensure a safe and welcoming environment for all visitors.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of:
- The theory and philosophy of recreational sports and activities.
- The ability to effectively communicate and represent the department's philosophy to others.
- The methods, rules, and techniques of sports for which the individual is hired to officiate and score.
Ability to:
- Maintain professionalism by staying composed in challenging or high-pressure situations.
- Demonstrate a positive attitude toward the game, participants, and all involved parties.
- Operate electronic scorekeeping devices with the manual dexterity required for accurate and timely input.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Must be at least fourteen (14) years of age.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
- Sufficient knowledge of the sport(s) to be officiated and scored.
- Ability to work a flexible schedule as required by the department.
