Traffic Dispatcher TMC (Systems Operator I‑Trainee)

Join the GFT team as a full‑time Traffic Dispatcher (Systems Operator I–Trainee) supporting the Regional Traffic Management Center for the New York State Department of Transportation, located in Syracuse, NY. This role requires overnight shifts and onsite regular attendance.

What You’ll Do:

• Call‑taking and data entry into computer logs and record‑keeping software (SharePoint, Outlook, Excel, Word, etc.).
• Monitor traffic cameras and the VMS to declare and respond to traffic incidents promptly.
• Deploy messaging and monitor Virtual Message System boards.
• Dispatch NYSDOT help truck crews for routine and emergency situations.
• Monitor & report over‑height vehicle alerts, construction zones, roadway closures.
• Dispatch & report traffic signal malfunctions and highway maintenance calls.
• Enter information into web‑based traffic information systems and mapping sites for travel alerts.
• Proactively monitor hotspots, work zones, accidents, weather, and special events.
• Perform record‑keeping tasks, enter computer data, complete daily reports, and quality control checks.
• Other duties as necessary.

What You’ll Bring:

• Associate’s degree or higher, or two years of full‑time operations dispatching experience (transportation, fire, police, EMS, 911, or military).
• Aptitude for exceptional customer service and interpersonal skills within a diverse group.
• Clear written and verbal communication in English.
• Ability to take calls, dispatch via radio or telephone, and communicate calmly and in detail.
• Capacity to coordinate real‑time activities and priorities with minimal supervision.
• Strong knowledge of Region 3 roadways.
• Multi‑tasking ability in a fast‑paced environment.
• Proficiency with Windows Office Suite and web applications; accurate keyboarding and report writing.
• Adherence to company code of conduct and policies.
• Willingness to work all shifts, including weekends, overnights, holidays, and be on‑call.
• Reliable transportation, a valid driver’s license, and strong work ethic.
• Completion of probationary training period.

Compensation:

• Salary range: $20–$22 per hour, dependent on experience and location.
• Eligibility for incremental pay increases upon successful completion of each training level, with potential promotion within the first year.
