Marketing Manager, Marketing Strategy
The Reading League, Inc. (TRL) is a nonprofit organization based in Syracuse, New York, with a mission to advance the awareness, understanding, and use of evidence-aligned reading instruction. TRL focuses on improving literacy outcomes for ALL students. By utilizing the body of knowledge known as the science of reading, which has culminated over 60 years of research, we can improve literacy instruction and outcomes.

The Vice President of Marketing is responsible for developing and executing a comprehensive marketing strategy that drives brand growth, customer acquisition, and revenue generation. The Vice President of Marketing is responsible for building and managing a high-performing team, strengthening the organization’s reputation, expanding audience engagement, leveraging data to make informed decisions, and aligning all marketing efforts with The Reading League's overarching business objectives.
GENERALRESPONSIBILITIES
- Strategic Leadership:
Develop and implement a cohesive, long-term marketing strategy to increase market share, enhance brand recognition, and achieve key business goals based on TRL’s strategic plan - Team Management & Development:
Lead, mentor, and grow a team of marketing professionals, fostering a culture of accountability, creativity, and excellence - Brand Management:
Oversee all of The Reading League’s branding initiatives, ensuring consistency across all channels and communications to maintain a strong, positive brand identity - Demand Generation:
Direct all digital and traditional marketing campaigns, including SEO/SEM, content marketing, social media, email marketing, and public relations, to drive qualified leads and customer engagement - Data & Analytics:
Establish and monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) and marketing metrics. Use data and market research to analyze campaign effectiveness, identify new opportunities, and inform strategic decisions - Budget Management:
Manage the marketing budget, ensuring resources are allocated efficiently to maximize ROI and achieve departmental objectives - Cross-Functional Collaboration:
Partner closely with sales, program, and other executive teams to ensure marketing strategies are fully aligned with company-wide goals and initiatives - Market Intelligence:
Stay ahead of industry trends, consumer behaviors, and competitor activities to maintain a competitive advantage - Stakeholder Communication:
Prepare and present regular reports on marketing performance and strategy to the executive team and other stakeholders
- Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Communications, Public Relations, Business, or a related field;
Master’s degree preferred - Significant understanding of the science of reading, including demonstrated knowledge of science-based reading instruction, curricula, instructional resources, and professional learning systems
- A minimum of ten years of progressive marketing experience with success in strategic planning, brand building, and integrated marketing campaigns
- A minimum of five years of experience in a leadership role, including managing a team of marketing professionals
- Experience in promoting evidence-based educational programs and resources to educators, literacy specialists, school and district leaders, and related stakeholders
- Background in creating marketing strategies that effectively communicate research-backed instructional approaches to both educators and non-expert audiences
- Proven track record of success in developing and executing comprehensive, data-driven marketing strategies that have led to measurable business growth
- Experience in a not-for-profit environment preferred
- Strong management skills that include budget preparation, analysis, and reporting
- Robust analytical skills with the ability to identify trends, analyze data, and make recommendations to senior management
- Experience and knowledge of digital marketing, web design, and management, social media, and digital marketing content strategy
