River Valley Holdings is a family-owned distribution company based in Syracuse, NY, serving retail customers across the northeastern United States. The River Valley family of companies;
River Valley Foods, Cavallaro Foods, and Empire Valley distributes a wide range of specialty dry and frozen grocery items and consumable products from warehouses in Syracuse, NY.
The Senior Accountant plays a key role in ensuring the accuracy, integrity, and timeliness of the company’s financial reporting. This position is responsible for core accounting functions including month-end close, inventory and cost accounting, freight and vendor reconciliations, and financial analysis. The Senior Accountant partners closely with operations, purchasing, and leadership to support sound decision-making, strengthen controls, and continuously improve financial processes.
SalaryRange
$80,000 – $95,000 per year, based on experience
ScheduleMonday – Friday
On-site | 8:00am – 4:30pm
- Prepare, review, and analyze monthly financial statements in accordance with GAAP and company policies
- Own key components of the month-end and year-end close processes, including journal entries, accruals, and various account reconciliations
- Manage inventory valuation, cost accounting and related financial reporting in a distribution environment
- Analyze freight variances and perform vendor reconciliations to ensure accurate costing and margin reporting
- Monitor financial data and trends, providing insights to support planning, forecasting, and decision-making
- Assist with budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis initiatives
- Maintain the general ledger and ensure accuracy of account balances
- Collaborate with internal departments to improve financial processes, controls, and data integrity
- Support external audits by preparing schedules, documentation, and financial reports
- Process and verify payments as needed, ensuring proper coding and accuracy
- Provide backup support for Accounts Payable when required
- Identify opportunities for efficiencies, process improvements, and stronger internal controls
- Perform other related duties as assigned
- Strong knowledge of general accounting and cost accounting principles
- Solid understanding of GAAP and financial reporting standards
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including pivot tables and financial analysis tools
- Experience working with ERP systems in a distribution, manufacturing, or inventory-driven environment
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills
- Ability to communicate effectively and work collaboratively across departments
- High attention to detail with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required
- 3–5 years of progressive accounting experience
- Experience with inventory valuation, cost accounting, and financial reporting required
- Prior experience supporting audits and close processes preferred
- Prolonged periods of sitting and working at a computer
- Ability to lift up to 15 pounds occasionally
