Postdoctoral Researcher in Ecological Population Modeling

The Swiss Ornithological Institute is a non‑profit foundation dedicated to ornithology and the protection of birds. It monitors native birds, researches their way of life and advocates for threatened species. It looks after injured and orphaned birds, provides information and advice to the public, and runs a visitor centre in Sempach. The Swiss Ornithological Institute currently has over 200 employees throughout the country.

The Unit Population Biology investigates how changes in demographic processes (survival, reproductive success, dispersal) affect spatio‑temporal patterns in the distribution and abundance of birds and which ecological factors influence them. The study of population change is complex because it is influenced by many extrinsic and intrinsic factors that are usually only partially observable. A second focus of the unit is therefore the development and dissemination of statistical models that enable such studies.

The Population Biology Unit is looking for a new team member, starting 1 April 2026, or by mutual agreement. We are seeking a

Postdoctoral Researcher in Ecological Population Modeling (80%)

You will study the dynamics of several alpine swift colonies located in Switzerland with an intensive, long‑term monitoring (25 years). The aim is to identify the underlying demographic causes of changes in colony size using integrated population models and retrospective population analyses. You will also focus on population synchrony and the impact of environmental factors in Switzerland or Western Africa, such as weather, in this migratory species.

You will collaborate with the Human Impact Unit, which conducts complementary research on the ecology of the alpine swifts.

A completed or soon to be completed PhD in biology or quantitative ecology, or imminent completion, is required. The job involves analysing data using Bayesian methods. The successful candidate has experience in, or a strong motivation to learn Bayesian statistics, capture‑recapture models and integrated population models. A key requirement is the ability and willingness to publish high‑quality papers and thus contribute to the scientific literature in ecology.

A solid grounding in quantitative population ecology would be advantageous.
