We are looking for a Senior Research Associate in Wind Turbine Aerodynamics to work on a new research project "Novel experimental methods for investigating wind turbine rotor blade tip vortex formation and breakdown in atmospheric turbulence" funded by the Swiss National Science Foundationtogether with the Max Planck Instistute in Germany.
The main task will be to work on the new research project "Novel experimental methods for investigating wind turbine rotor blade tip vortex formation and breakdown in atmospheric turbulence" funded by the Swiss National Science Foundationtogether with the Max Planck Instistute in Germany.
The main responsibilities will be:
- Develop novel experimental methods for investigating wind turbine rotor blade tip vortex formation and breakdown in atmospheric turbulence on an operating wind turbine in Switzerland.
- Design and run aerodynamics field experiments on the operating wind turbine including blade loads and vibrations, blade surface pressure measurements using the Aerosense technology, and Lagrangian Particle Tracking.
- Develop data collection, preparation and analysis methods, with a focus on the surface pressure measurements.
- Demonstrate the scientific value of the experimental method and develop coupling relationships between between inflow turbulence characteristics, blade aerodynamics and vortex dynamics.
- Work together with external research and industry partners.
- Contribute to new research project proposals.
- Contribute to other small industry or research projects.
- Ensure smooth the operation and maintenance of the operating wind turbine.
- Write conference and journal papers, hold presentations and attend international conferences.
Other tasks will include:
- Contribute actively to the Insitute's Diverstiy, Equity and Inclusion strategy.
- Take part in the international collaboration IEA Wind Task 47.
- Organise and take part in other relevant seminars and events.
- Support the supervision of student projects and small teaching assistant activities.
- Master's degree in Engineering with a focus on aerodynamics or wind energy
- PhD in Engineering with a focus on aerodynamics or wind energy OR at least three years professional experience in the field
- Experience in experimental aerodynamics, preferably in field tests
- Experience in data management and analysis
- Versed in Python and Matlab
- High level of independent, structured, and quality-conscious working methods, as well as strong teamwork skills
- High flexibility to a changing, dynamic environment
- Fluent in English (at least C1)
- Basic level of German (at least A2) and willingness to improve
The contract will initially be limited to one year, with the option to extend to three years later.
The application must be submitted in English.
