Crystal Lake Elementary District 47 currently has an opening for a Reading Recovery Teacher Leader. This position is a long-term commitment and is designed to provide ongoing professional development for teachers, in Reading Recovery (tier 3/intensive) intervention, for students in first grade who are struggling in literacy. Performs coaching site visits for all teachers who are currently teaching Reading Recovery. Coordinates Reading Recovery activities for the district and provides for other literacy support as needed.
AssignedResponsibilities Year One
- Enroll in and successfully complete coursework required by the Reading Recovery Council of North America. These courses may be held during the daytime or in the evening.
- Work one-on-one with four Reading Recovery children each day.
- Demonstrate teaching, "behind the glass" with one Reading Recovery child at least three times during the training year.
- Carry out arranged internship at least once a month with a certified Teacher Leader in order to learn the full role of the Teacher Leader, including but not limited to:
- Make school visits to Reading Recovery/DLL teachers
- Observe Continuing Contact Sessions
- Attend the National Reading Recovery Conference during the training year, and attend the required Teacher Leader Summer Institute each year of participation in Reading Recovery.
- Work with Site Coordinator to plan and initiate activities related to Reading Recovery/DLL (budget, training, etc.).
- Report to building administrators.
- Continue to work one-on-one with four Reading Recovery students each day during the field year.
- After the field year, continue to work one-on-one with at least two Reading Recovery students each day.
- Monitor the testing and selection of students for the program and for discontinuing students from the program. Work with the site coordinator to coordinate testing with district requirements.
- Instruct 5-12 new Reading Recovery teachers, develop and follow a course syllabus which includes content and up-to-date training materials to comply with National Louis University guidelines (as needed after field year).
- Conduct assessment training, including practice with children, for a minimum of 24 hours (as needed after field year).
- Visit teachers-in-training at least four to six times a year to provide guidance and instructional coaching.
- Provide trained teachers with at least six continuing contact professional learning sessions each year.
- Visit trained teachers at least once each year, with additional visits based on need or request.
- Attend the National Reading Recovery Conference and attend the required Teacher Leader Summer Institute each year of participation in Reading Recovery.
- Assist in recruiting and identifying teachers for the training class.
- Meet with school administrators to review data and ensure quality implementation.
- Collect entry, exit, and end-of-year data on Reading Recovery, DLL, and/or Literacy Lessons children using NDEC approved format, procedures, and materials.
- Prepare an annual site report and submit to site coordinator and affiliated university training center.
- Conduct professional learning sessions for administrators, teachers, parents, and Board of Education as requested.
- Work with Site Coordinator to plan and initiate activities related to Reading Recovery/DLL (budget, training, etc.).
- Maintain the RRCNA standards for establishment and operation of a site.

Position Requirements- Master's Degree in Education
- 5 or more years of exemplary classroom experience, preferably with at least 3 years with primary age children
- Demonstrate high levels of flexibility, effective interpersonal communication skills, articulation, concentration, confidentiality, and organization.
- Physical requirements include sitting, standing, bending, walking and lifting equipment and materials.
