Nature and Scope of Job

To act under the general direction of the building principal and perform those duties required by school nurses to meet specific requirements as listed in state statutes and local school district policy related to the overall health care of students in the school system and other duties as assigned. School nurses employed by the Board of Education have the educational background, experiences and competencies to carry out the responsibilities and functions outlined below.

School nurses continue to expand their identified roles. Professional growth is essential to any specialty area. Schools may well provide a facility in the nation for health promotion and the delivery of primary health care.

Job Functions Essential Functions

Prepares and develops building budget(s) for medical needs and supplies/equipment on an annual basis.

Renders first aid as necessary to students and staff members as required during the school day.

Provides information to staff members or students who have special health needs.

Develops procedures and provides for crisis intervention for acute illness, injury and emotional disturbances.

Promotes and assists in the control of communicable diseases through preventive immunization programs, early detection, surveillance and reporting of contagious diseases.

Maintains, evaluates and interprets cumulative health data to accommodate individual needs of students.

Provides health education:

a. Teaches parenting skills as they relate to child development and health needs of children.
b. Provides direct health education and health counseling to assist students and families in making decisions on health and life styles that affect health.
d. Counsels with students concerning problems such as pregnancy, sexually transmitted diseases, mental health issues, and substance abuse in order to facilitate responsible decision‑making practices.
e. Serves as a resource person to the classroom teacher and administrator in health instruction and as a member of the health curriculum development committees.

Provides instruction to staff members and community members on the proper immunization status for students within the school system.

Plans and implements school health management protocols for the child with special health needs, including the administration of medication.

Participates on the Multi‑discipline Evaluation Team and Child Study Committee regarding student being referred for Special Education Services.

Acts as a resource person in promoting health careers.

Provides leadership and/or support for staff wellness programs.

Other Functions

Assists with the various "screening" (vision and hearing) activities throughout the school year.

Assists the building principal in determining which students may need to be excluded from school in case of a medical emergency or epidemic situation.

Assists with the development of school district policy(ies) related to the health care of students and staff within the school district.

Follows all school district policies and procedures.

Provides technical assistance to staff members in the area of health care education and management.

Assists with the development of health curriculum for the school district.

Coordinates school and community health activities and serves as a liaison person between the home, school and community.

Performs other duties as assigned.
