Primary Purpose

Substitute for absent teacher or other employee and perform the duties of the absent employee. Provide students with appropriate learning activities and experiences in the academic subject areas assigned and assist students to fulfill their potential for intellectual, emotional, physical, and social growth.

Qualifications
  • Education/Certification: HS Diploma/GED Equivalency (required). Must be at least 18 years old (subject to campus restriction based on age).
  • Special Knowledge/

    Skills:

    Desire to work with students of all ages, social, and ethnic backgrounds;
    General knowledge of academic subjects, curriculum, and instruction;
    Ability to instruct students and manage their behavior;
    Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
Major Responsibilities and Duties

Instructional Strategies

  • Implement teachers’ lesson plans that fulfill the requirements of the District’s curriculum program.
  • Present subject matter according to guidelines established by the Texas Education Agency, board policy, and administrative regulations.
  • Use appropriate instructional and learning strategies, activities, materials, and equipment that reflect understanding of the learning styles and needs of assigned students.
  • Work cooperatively with special education teachers to present modified curricula as needed for special education students according to guidelines established in Individual Education Plans (IEP).
  • Use technology to strengthen the teaching/learning process, as applicable.

Student Growth and Development

  • Assume responsibility for extracurricular activities as assigned by the principal.
  • Assist students in analyzing and improving study methods and habits.
  • Attend and participate in parent meetings as requested by principal.

Classroom Management and Organization

  • Create a classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate for students’ physical, social, and emotional development.
  • Manage student behavior in accordance with the student code of conduct, student handbook, and campus procedures.
  • Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Compile, maintain, and file physical and computerized reports, records, and other documents as required.

Communication

  • Establish and maintain open communication by conducting conferences with parents, students, principals, and teachers, as applicable.
  • Maintain a professional relationship with colleagues, students, parents, and community members.
  • Use effective communication skills to present information accurately and clearly.
  • Be a positive role model for students and support the District’s mission.
  • Maintain high degree of confidentiality.

Professional Growth and Development

  • Keep informed of and comply with policies and procedures.
  • Attend and participate in faculty meetings as requested by principal.

Mental Demands / Physical Demands / Environmental Factors

Tools/Equipment Used: Standard classroom equipment including computer, peripherals, iPad, Chromebook, other electronic devices, and telephone.

Posture: Frequent standing/walking, kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, twisting.

Motion: Frequent repetitive hand motions, keyboarding, use of mouse, wrist flexion/extension.

Lifting: Minimal lifting and carrying up to 30 pounds without assistance.

Environment: Work outside and inside; exposure to contagious diseases.

Mental Demands: Maintain emotional control under stress, work with frequent interruptions.
