Position Overview
Pre‑K Teacher (Special Education) – Special Education Department – Districtwide
Reports to:
Building Principal or District Level Administrator. FLSA Designation:
Exempt.
This class is accountable for providing instruction and other educational supports such as case management to special needs students and assisting them in their academic and social development.
Minimum Knowledge,Skills and Abilities
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
- Valid Connecticut State Board of Education teaching certificate/endorsement appropriate to the teaching assignment.
- Current Motor Vehicle Class D Operator License may be required.
- Teachers must complete all State CEU requirements for re‑certification.
- Considerable knowledge of best practices, laws including IDEA and due process.
- Knowledge of child development, educational philosophy, teaching methods and research‑based practices.
- Knowledge of PBIS and SRBI.
- Skill in accommodations for visual impairments, assistive technology, behavior management and classroom organization.
- Skill in transitional service planning and remedial instruction.
- Ability to develop and update curriculum and assessment tools for special education students.
- Ability to work with students from diverse backgrounds and with a wide range of disabilities.
- Attend staff, building, parent, team and case management meetings.
- Communicate and consult with team members, parents and outside agencies regarding students’ interventions, medications and programmatic needs.
- Develop data collection and management systems; analyze data and recommend quarterly classes based upon individual student needs.
- Develop or utilize assessment tools and progress reports, including interactive report cards.
- Build positive and trusting relationships with students; counsel them and review transition activities, providing job coaching.
- Develop, adapt and implement curriculum and lesson plans aligned with academic standards.
- Ensure teams use least‑restrictive environment concepts and best practices.
- Handle student transportation issues and supervise students on campus and in vehicles.
- Participate in staff development activities.
- Provide direct instruction using individualized instruction, lectures, team teaching and other strategies.
- Manage student behavior, implement disciplinary procedures and develop individualized intervention plans.
- Ensure student safety during extreme weather, transportation and other situations.
- Work with IEP teams to develop, manage and reevaluate IEPs; write goals and participate in conferences.
- Order supplies and materials related to curriculum and instruction.
- Provide in‑service training to other staff as needed.
- Serve as a case manager for transition planning at the Middle School and High School levels.
- Assist hearing impaired students on an itinerant basis.
- Perform other related duties as required.
Employees appointed to this class must have adequate physical strength, stamina, agility, visual and auditory acuity and maintain such fitness as needed to perform the duties. A physical examination may be required.
