Special Education Process Coordinator

Purpose/Summary/Job Goal:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

Degrees required or preferred:

A minimum of Bachelor’s Degree with emphasis in Cross-Categorical Special Education. A graduate degree and experience is preferred. Valid Missouri Teacher Certification and/or appropriate Missouri Certification for academic field.

A valid Missouri teaching certificate and complete transcript(s) of college credit must be on file for each teacher before the beginning of each new school year. It is the duty of each teacher to possess a valid certificate that covers the academic year, (the teaching assignment/s and all other areas listed on the certificate). The teacher must assure that all professional development requirements and other DESE requirements are met to keep certification current.

JOB GOAL: Supervise the special education process from referral through placement and provision of services, appropriate identification and placement of students with disabilities and district compliance with state and federal requirements for special education.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

Collaborate and assist guidance department in enrolling students with an IEP throughout the school year.

Special Education Process
  • Keep informed of legal requirements and compliance issues governing Special Education.
  • Provide support to Special Education Teachers and Guidance Counselors with compliance requirements and paperwork. Monitor timelines and compliance issues with Special Education Teachers, as requested.
  • Organize Special Education Staffing Meetings.
  • Coordinate evaluation plans and reevaluations.
  • Assist in determining student eligibility for special education services.
  • Assist in the maintenance of individual records of students with disabilities.
  • Assist in the coordination of outside/contractual/private/parochial evaluations, evaluation reports, and IEP conferences.
  • Act as a resource for parents inquiring about the special education process and procedures.
  • Serve as an LEA Representative as necessary, which means you’re the first choice for LEA Rep at the majority of the meetings.
  • Serve as a mentor to new teachers concerning the special education process.
Administrative
  • Maintain communication with the Director of Special Education.
  • Collaborate with the Director to develop and implement district special education procedures.
  • Maintain a database for the District for IEP’s, Review of Existing Data, Evaluations, and Referral timelines.
  • Complete a DESE Document B review of one file for each special education case manager.
  • Enter, change, and delete Special Education student information in SASI.
Building Support
  • Serve as a resource for special needs issues.
  • Maintain communication with the Building Administrators concerning issues of students with disabilities.
