Job summary

We are delighted to offer an exciting opportunity for a 10 session Resident Consultant Obstetrics & Gynaecology, subspecialising in high‑risk pregnancy and perinatal mental health care. This is a replacement post joining a team of 21 Consultants responsible for the provision of O&G services at Singleton Hospital within Swansea Bay University Health Board.

Sessional Commitment

10 Sessions contracted with 7 Direct Clinical Commitments and 3 Supporting Professional Activities. After 3 months a review of the job plan will be undertaken depending on special interests and service needs. A full session is 3 hours and 45 minutes duration.

Main duties of the job

The out of hours on call provision is also supported by an additional on‑call non‑resident O&G Consultant and is in line with the "ensuring safe out of hours support for complex emergency obstetrics and gynaecology surgery" RCOG recommendations. Support services on‑call during out of hours include General Surgery, Vascular, Gynae‑Oncology and Urology.

Direct Clinical Activities include:

  • Emergency duties (including work carried out during or arising from on‑call)
  • Gynaecology and delivery suite service weeks
  • Operating sessions including pre‑ and post‑operative care
  • Ward rounds / Outpatient clinics / Clinical diagnostic work / Other patient treatment
  • Public health duties
  • Multi‑disciplinary meetings about direct patient care
  • Administration directly related to patient care e.g., referrals, notes, etc.

Swansea Bay University Health Board has responsibility for the health of around 390,000 people in the Neath Port Talbot and Swansea areas, with a budget of around £1 billion and employing 12,500 people. We are a University Health Board working in partnership with Swansea University, Swansea School of Medicine, the School of Health Science and the Institute of Life Science. The HB has three major hospitals providing a range of services:
Morriston and Singleton hospitals in Swansea and Neath Port Talbot hospital in Baglan, Port Talbot.

Mental Health and learning Disabilities services are provided both in hospital settings (Cefn Coed Hospital, Swansea Caswell clinic and Taith Newydd at Glanrhyd Bridgend) and other community settings.

Person Specification Qualifications Essential
  • Fully Registered with the GMC and licensed to practice
  • MRCOG (or equivalent)
  • Evidence of training, experience and independent practice in Obstetrics and General Gynaecology
  • CCT or eligible within six months of interview date and can demonstrate evidence that they are expected to achieve CCT within 6 months
Desirable
  • ATSM in Maternal Medicine / Experience in Perinatal Mental Health care
Experience Essential
  • Evidence of thorough and broad training in both Obstetrics and Gynaecology
  • Able to independently manage Gynaecology patients
  • Ability to manage emergency gynaecology independently.
  • Ability to:

    -Take full and independent responsibility for the clinical care of patients.

    -Perform appropriate surgery for emergency gynaecology.

    -Independently manage women with complications in early pregnancy.
  • Evidence of active participation in clinical audit
Desirable
  • Evidence of initiating change through the audit process
Skills & Abilities Essential
  • Knowledge & awareness of diversity and human rights
  • Ability to communicate effectively and have excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work constructively in a multidisciplinary team, be flexible and responsive to the needs of colleagues and provide team leadership
