We are pleased to announce a vacancy as a Consultant Medical Microbiologist/Infection Specialist at Epsom & St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust. The role is full‑time, but part‑time candidates are also welcome to apply.
Main duties of the jobThe successful candidate will share responsibility for providing a comprehensive clinical microbiology service to the Trust, local GPs and other organisations that hold a contract with the Trust. The post is based at the South West London Pathology Hub located at St Georges Hospital, Tooting.
- FRCPath or equivalent, or evidence of an equivalent qualification.
- Full specialist registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) (or eligible for registration within six months of interview).
- UK‑trained applicants must hold a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) or be within six months of award of CCT by interview date.
- Non‑UK‑trained applicants must provide evidence of equivalence to the UK CCT.
St George's, Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals and Health Group care for a population of four million people in South West London and North East Surrey. Our sites include St George's Hospital, St Helier Hospital, Queen Mary's Hospital for Children, and Epsom Hospital.
Job responsibilitiesConsultant Medical Microbiologist duties:
The appointee will, together with the other Consultant Microbiologists, be responsible for the provision of a comprehensive, efficient, and cost‑effective clinical microbiology and virology service to the Trust and other users of the service. The post is based at St Helier with some time allocated at Epsom for clinical rounds, antimicrobial stewardship, and liaison with local General Practitioners.
The post comes with 1 PA for specialist clinical infection work. The Trust currently has no formal OPAT service, presenting an opportunity for a suitable candidate to lead its future development.
All microbiology consultants will be expected to contribute to the following:
- Day‑to‑day supervision of diagnostic methods and examination of specimens.
- Authorisation and interpretation of results.
- Involvement in policy and SOP preparation.
- Responsibility for quality assurance performance within the department, including participation in all relevant National External Quality Assurance programmes.
- Achievement and maintenance of full accreditation with UKAS or an equivalent agency.
- Business planning, including assessment and introduction of new methods and forward planning for staff and equipment requirements.
- Antibiotic stewardship liaison with clinical teams.
- Clinical liaison with medical teams (primarily Same Day Emergency Care) to manage complex infections requiring prolonged courses of antibiotics and give advice and guidance on management.
- Share responsibility for the recruitment, appointment, and supervision of junior medical staff in accordance with Trust policies.
- Devote time regularly for teaching and training of junior medical staff and other Trust staff, contributing as appropriate to post‑graduate and continuing medical education.
- Devote time, through agreement, for teaching and training of medical students as part of agreed teaching arrangements with the Undergraduate School.
- Teaching and participating in professional education at regional and national level is encouraged and supported.
Responsibilities include managing, appraising, and disciplining attached junior doctors, maintaining personal and professional development, registering with respective Royal Colleges for CME/CPD, and participating in Trust governance and clinical audit.
Person specification Qualifications- Medical qualification registered with the GMC.
