SummaryThis is a part‑time faculty position for a DSPS Learning Disability Specialist. The assignment primarily includes teaching special classes for students with learning disabilities and head trauma, diagnostic testing, advising students as to their learning needs and appropriate learning strategies, and coordination with instructional assistants.
Education and ExperienceMaster’s degree in learning disabilities, special education, education, psychology, speech language pathology, communication disorders, educational or school psychology, counseling, or rehabilitation counseling
AND 15 semester units of upper division or graduate study in the area of learning disabilities, to include adult cognitive and achievement assessment OR the equivalent Master’s degree (Title V; Section 53414)(f)
Preference will be given to candidates who already possess LDESM certification for being an LD Specialist within the California Community College system. Candidates who are not currently certified, will be required to be trained and certified at the next available CCC Chancellor’s Office training opportunity.
Licenses and CertificatesSupplemental: This is a part‑time position that includes testing students for learning disabilities. The California Community College Chancellor’s Office requires LD Specialists to be trained and certified. Therefore, candidates who are not currently certified must receive training and LDESM certification within 9 months of their hiring date.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- To advise students concerning learning disabilities assessment procedures, learning disabilities testing results, and recommended services.
- To provide diagnostic and verification of learning disabilities by administering and/or interpreting either the Woodcock‑Johnson Battery‑Revised (WJ‑R) and/or the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale‑Revised ( WAIS
-R). - To teach special classes for students with learning disabilities and head trauma.
- To oversee and train instructional assistants in small group and individualized instruction.
- To meet individually with students to discuss their diagnostic testing, learning styles, and academic needs.
- To maintain accurate attendance, scholastic, state, and federal records.
- To serve as an advocate/ liaison between students and faculty when appropriate.
- Perform other related duties as assigned that support the overall objective of the position.
- May require work, coordination, or instruction in a prison environment

Qualifications:
- Experience in administering and interpreting the WJ‑R and WAIS
-R. - Experience in diagnosing learning disabilities and communicating diagnostic information that helps students maximize their learning strengths.
- Knowledge of technologies to aid students with learning disabilities.
- Experience in training and supervising employees.
- Prior teaching experience.
- Analyze problems, determine effective solutions, take independent action for successful results
- Prepare clear, concise and comprehensive written and oral reports
- Effectively communicate in both oral and written forms
- Establish and maintain effective work relationships
- Maintain currency in technological developments in areas of responsibility
- Work with designated computer programs and systems
Requires sufficient ambulatory ability to move to various campus and community locations. Requires hand‑eye‑arm coordination to use a personal computer keyboard. Requires sufficient visual acuity to recognize words and numbers. Sufficient auditory ability to carry on conversations in person and over the phone and make presentations to large audiences.
