Role
CUC is currently seeking an Equipment Operator to join our underground civil crew. This role will be based out of Surrey, British Columbia. The Equipment Operator position works closely with the Foreman and other members of a construction crew to ensure that safe and efficient excavation procedures are followed. In concert with the Foreman, CUC operators ensure that excavating equipment and tools are well maintained and kept in excellent operating condition.
An employee so classified shall, with minimum supervision, perform the duties of an Equipment Operator on machines up to and including backhoes, excavators, front end loader (four wheel drive type included); trenching machines of all sizes; portable or permanently mounted cranes, truck tractor units; lowbed, highboy; crawler tractors; side booms, air compressors and like machines.

Responsibilities- Operate heavy machinery (e.g., excavators, loaders, forklifts)
- Conduct daily equipment inspections
- Perform basic maintenance and cleaning
- Follow all safety procedures and wear PPE
- Read and interpret site plans or blueprints
- Communicate with supervisors and crew members
- Monitor equipment for performance issues
- Load, unload, and move materials safely
- Maintain a clean and hazard‑free work area
- Record operational data and maintenance logs
- Work in various weather conditions
- Assist with site preparation and grading
- Transport equipment between job sites
- Comply with environmental regulations
- Participate in ongoing training and certification
- 1 – 3 years of experience operating heavy machinery
- Some experience with sidewalk and curb installation, including forming, pouring, and finishing concrete, considered and asset
- Valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License (Commercial driver’s license preferred)
- Strong hand‑eye coordination and spatial awareness
- Ability to operate various types of heavy machinery
- Knowledge of safety procedures and hazard recognition
- Basic mechanical and troubleshooting skills
- Ability to read and interpret site plans or instructions
- Good communication and teamwork skills
- Physical stamina and ability to work in various conditions
- Attention to detail and situational awareness
- Union: IBEW - $43.49 per hour
