** Job Summary
** This position is responsible for overseeing data collection for studies measuring physiological signals. The incumbent will assist with conducting research work by performing specific assigned tasks, such as, administering forms or questionnaires, recording physiological signals and/or coding data, and/or observations and conducting data collection using standardized techniques. They will also assist in analyzing and interpreting experiment results or research data by performing tasks, such as, assembly, compilation and summary of statistical and other data.
The incumbent will be responsible for the operation, maintenance and troubleshooting problems with lab equipment. They will also be expected to organize laboratory and stock, maintains inventory and distributes supplies. They may distribute work assignments to employees at lower classification levels and initiate new employees into routines, procedures and operation of equipment. The incumbent will also be responsible for data review, analysis and synthesis for manuscript preparation.
Preferred experience for this position includes: physiological signals capture, anatomical and physiological education, and experience independently conducting research. The position will be based primarily at Surrey Memorial hospital.
** Organizational Status
** The incumbent reports to the Lab Director and will work closely with the other members of the research team including:
Research Assistants, and Graduate and Undergraduate Students.
** Work Performed
** Sets up measurement devices and maintains laboratory equipment used for data collection.
Accurately completes data collection and documentation.
Assists in analyzing physiological measures.
Responsible for equipment cleaning and storage.
May assist in manuscript preparation for submission to peer-reviewed journals.
May oversee and direct the work of research assistants in lower-level classifications.
Carries out any other related duties as required in keeping with the qualifications and requirements of positions in this classification.
Works within well-defined guidelines and procedures, but exercises judgment in establishing priorities and carrying tasks through to completion; new or unusual problems are referred to supervisor.
** Consequence of Error/Judgement
** Failure to maintain a high standard of work with consistent communication between team members and the Principal Investigator may result in delays and quality of research output, which may impact the working conditions, reputation, and funding for the research group and UBC. Important decisions (e.g. analyzing data, adequacy of environment for collecting data, type of analysis to proceed with, how much direction or training to provide to other assistants, etc.)
will be made in consultation with the principal investigator, who will regularly check in with the assistant.
** Supervision Received
** Works under general supervision; receives detailed instructions on the assignment of new duties and thereafter only on new or unusual problems. The Lab Director will determine priorities, assign work, and periodically review the assistant's work.
** Supervision Given
** May oversee and direct the work of one or two employees at lower classifications in which case they are responsible for the accuracy, production, and control of the work unit.
