Description
Douglas County is seeking candidates to fill permanent positions and establish an eligibility list for the Douglas County Jail. Individuals with experience in security, group homes, mental health, and/or crisis intervention are encouraged to apply. Extensive on‑job training is provided for those with no experience who wish to start a career in corrections. The Jailer is responsible for maintaining the institution's security and the custody and correctional treatment of inmates, contributing to the health and welfare of inmates, and promoting good public relations.
Additional collateral assignments may include program facilitation and activity coordination.
- Perform a variety of duties to ensure the proper maintenance of the jail in accordance with department and state policies.
- Have direct and daily contact with inmates.
- Maintain security of the institution through observation of inmate behavior, maintenance of discipline, accountability of tools, and counseling of inmates on institutional and personal problems.
- Motivate inmates to learn and adhere to jail procedure and behavior expectations.
- Report to the Jail Sergeant all actions of misconduct, abnormal behavior or attitudes of prisoners.
- Receive and report to Jail Sergeant all notable prisoner grievances.
- Escort and transport inmates to and from various activities within and outside the jail, while safeguarding prisoners' valuables.
- Assist with the inmate admission, classification, and release processes.
- Prepare arrest records identifying prisoners and charges assigned.
- Monitor and direct various inmate programs (e.g., recreation, visitation), supervise inmate movement, and maintain control of assigned areas of responsibility.
- Provide and summon assistance and aid for inmates while maintaining the safety and security of the facility.
- Dispense authorized medications and administer first aid and CPR.
- Deliver meals, mail, supplies, etc., to the inmates.
- Maintain necessary financial records (e.g., cash accounts, bail, fines).
- Collect, maintain, and complete necessary records and reports (e.g., criminal history, medical screening, medication delivery, inmate activity, visitor logs, incident and discipline reports).
- Prepare written reports such as incident reports, minor work orders, memos of involvement in specific incidents, and accident or injury reports.
- Maintain criminal record files.
- Search and observe inmates, visitors, vendors, inmate workers, and others to ensure security.
- Inspect all jail areas to ensure adherence to all policies and procedures (e.g., sanitation, security).
- Supervise inmates in living quarters and instruct them in proper housekeeping and sanitation.
- Supervise and instruct inmates in the proper use and care of tools and equipment.
- Maintain strict control over hazardous tools, locks, keys, and other items that could be used to effect an escape or cause injury.
- Assist with prisoners' work detail and supervise prisoners in the jail.
- Work in the central control area monitoring various computer systems, fire, building, and security alarms and devices to ensure proper security for the jail and adjoining buildings.
- Answer the Sheriff's Department/Jail Division business phone as needed.
- May be required to administer portable breath tests.
- Perform other duties as required.
- 18 years of age.
- High School Diploma.
- Valid driver's license.
- Must not have been convicted of a felony without reversal or pardon.
- Ability to provide truthful, effective, and credible testimony in court.
- Must be able to attend Wisconsin Jail Officer Academy and become a Certified Jailer; training is provided within the first year.
- Distance of 45 minutes commute from the Douglas County Jail in Superior, WI required within 18 months.
