Overview

The City of Sunnyvale is recruiting for a Fleet Services Coordinator. This fixed-term? full-time position focuses on fleet maintenance, vehicle/equipment replacement, fleet planning and management, permitting, and regulatory compliance. The Fleet Division ensures the City's vehicles and equipment operate safely and efficiently to support city services.

Responsibilities
  • Under general direction, supervise, coordinate and monitor the activities of mechanics and semi-skilled workers engaged in maintaining, modifying, overhauling, and repairing automobiles, light and heavy trucks, and general construction equipment; support fleet maintenance operations; coordinate scheduled and unscheduled repair requests or projects; and perform other duties as assigned.
  • Plan, schedule, assign and oversee the work of employees engaged in repair, overhaul, modification, maintenance and adjustment of fleet equipment.
  • Select, train and evaluate staff; assign and delegate work to meet performance standards; recommend disciplinary action when needed.
  • Prioritize maintenance workload based on staffing; coordinate repair requests and prepare parts and labor cost estimates.
  • Conduct cost-benefit studies; monitor preventive maintenance programs; develop inspection procedures and verify inspections in compliance with applicable regulations.
  • Assist mechanics in diagnosing problems; arrange for manufacturer or industry training demonstrations; provide on-the-job training.
  • Recommend improvements to meet operating and safety requirements; direct modification and fabrication of parts and equipment as needed.
  • Provide quality control by following up on repairs and investigating comeback repairs; initiate and track maintenance work orders using a fleet management system; maintain equipment history and service records.
  • Coordinate special work with other departments; recommend disposition of obsolete or non-repairable equipment; attend industry conferences and review technical literature to enhance knowledge.
Qualifications
  • Minimum education and experience: A high school diploma or GED, AND five years of journey-level mechanical maintenance and repair experience for gasoline or diesel vehicles and construction equipment, with some supervisory or lead experience. College or technical coursework in automotive technology or heavy equipment repair may substitute on a year-for-year basis for up to two years of the required experience.
  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
    Thorough knowledge of automotive and construction equipment maintenance; safety regulations; lubrication methods. Working knowledge of supervision, training, cost analysis, inventory control, and fleet maintenance software. Skill in using hand, power, and mechanical tools; operating overhaul and test equipment. Ability to plan, organize, schedule, direct, and coordinate work; evaluate staff; read mechanical drawings; estimate labor and materials; maintain records; develop and apply data processing techniques to maintenance and scheduling;

    establish working relationships; follow safety practices; operate standard office equipment.
  • Licenses/Certificates:
    Valid California Class C driver’s license with safe driving record;
    Class A license required within six months from date of hire.
Desirable Qualifications
  • Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification(s) in automotive and/or truck repair.
  • State licenses for brake repair, pollution devices and lamp adjustment.
