Position: Software Engineer II - Media Platform (Backend)

About the Role

The Media Platform team builds the foundational backend systems that power media ingestion, processing, intelligence, and delivery for Uber's Safety ecosystem. We enable teams to build safety products on top of reliable, scalable media infrastructure without needing to manage scale, privacy, or compliance complexities.

As an L4 Backend Engineer, you will build and improve core backend services that handle high-scale media workflows. You'll contribute to systems that directly support incident response, safety investigations, and media-driven decision-making across Uber.

What the Candidate Will Need / Bonus Points What the Candidate Will Do

Design, implement, and maintain backend services that support media ingestion, processing, and retrieval.

Contribute to building reliable and scalable APIs used by Safety and Trust product teams.

Participate in design reviews, code reviews, and operational improvements.

Troubleshoot production issues and improve system observability, performance, and reliability.

Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ship new platform capabilities.

Basic Qualifications

3+ years of backend software engineering experience building production systems.

Strong proficiency in one or more backend languages (e.g., Go, Java, Python).

Solid understanding of data structures, APIs, distributed systems fundamentals, and writing maintainable, testable code.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience building microservices or working in service-oriented architectures.

Experience building or operating media systems (e.g., video ingestion, streaming pipelines, transcoding, storage, CDN integration). Familiarity with media container formats, codecs, and streaming protocols such as MP4, HEVC, H.264, VP9, JPEG, HLS, and DASH.

Familiarity with asynchronous/event-driven systems (e.g., Kafka, Pub/Sub).

Exposure to cloud infrastructure and storage systems (object storage, caching, CDN concepts).

Experience working in high-availability, reliability-focused environments.

For San Francisco, CA-based roles:
The base salary range for this role is USD $171,000 per year - USD $190,000 per year. For Sunnyvale, CA-based roles:
The base salary range for this role is USD $171,000 per year - USD $190,000 per year. For all US locations, you will be eligible to participate in Uber's bonus program, and may be offered an equity award & other types of comp. All full-time employees are eligible to participate in a 401(k) plan. You will also be eligible for various benefits.
