About The Role

Search at Uber Eats is more than just a utility; it is the engine for discovery that drives over a third of our business. Uber is on a mission to evolve search from a simple query box into an adaptive, intuitive experience that understands user intent before they even finish typing. We are looking for a senior engineer and product thinker to help us redefine how millions of users discover the food, groceries, and merchants on our platform.

You will design and ship the systems that power our next‑generation search results by engineering new modes for intent expression and discovery. You won’t just build features; you’ll improve how we build them. A key part of our charter is improving engineering foundations to increase velocity and modernize our tech stack.

• Own the Future of Search:
  Lead the technical strategy and end‑to‑end execution for core initiatives, including new experiences for discovery, the search stack on a modular framework, and foundations for natural language search.
• Build for Nuance and Scale:
  Design, code, and ship features using Go and modern web technologies, solving complex challenges at the intersection of ranking, retrieval logic, and user‑facing presentation.
• Drive the "Flywheel":
  Work with PMs, Designers, and UXR to understand deep user needs and ship improvements that build trust and kick‑start engagement.
• Level‑Up the Team:
  Mentor other engineers, elevate engineering foundations through initiatives such as migration to Lego, and champion high‑quality code and rapid execution.

• 6+ years of professional software engineering experience and a track record of shipping high‑impact, user‑facing products.
• Strong proficiency in a backend language such as Go, Java, or Python and experience designing APIs and services that power front‑end surfaces.
• A strong sense of product intuition and a passion for the user; not just an implementer, but a thinker who understands why.
• Ability to elevate engineers through thoughtful code reviews, clear design documentation, and mentorship.

• Direct experience with Search, Recommendations, or Ranking systems.
• History of successfully leading complex, cross‑functional projects with autonomy and ambiguity.
• Deep understanding of distributed systems and the ability to build and maintain highly available, low‑latency services at scale.
• Data‑driven mindset with comfort in diagnosing performance issues from metrics.
• Excitement for Uber’s "Inspiration and Discovery" pillar and ideas for compelling experiences that exceed user expectations.

For San Francisco, CA‑based roles: base salary range USD 198,000 – 220,000 per year. For Sunnyvale, CA‑based roles: base salary range USD 198,000 – 220,000 per year. For all US locations, you will be eligible to participate in Uber’s bonus program, may be offered equity, and be eligible for various benefits.
