Job Description
IBEW Hourly represented employees who currently work at the main (Sunnyvale/Palo Alto) unit, Santa Cruz, VAFB or Eastern Range facilities must apply to open requisitions on Brass Ring to be considered for the position. This occupation requires repair, installation and maintenance of plant electrical systems.
Responsibilities include determining routing, location, and methods of installing wires, conduits, equipment, fixtures and accessories following trade practice, blueprints, wiring diagrams and applicable state, municipal and underwriters' specifications, codes and ordinances. Determine needs for repair or replacement, the safest method of restoring interrupted service, compute wire gauge, power and load limits when required. Perform construction and maintenance operations such as installing and maintaining large motors, transformer banks, welding generators, panels and switchboards, splicing, tapping and insulating high voltage wire, troubleshooting hot circuits, maintaining electrical systems on plant machines, inspecting repair and maintenance operations for overhead cranes and hoist equipment, rebuilding and rewinding motors, generators, transformers, diagnosing troubles, replacing parts and units, dismantling, disassembling, repairing and installing electrical units.
Must possess license or certificate as required by law and be able to perform satisfactorily the functions of a Maintenance Electrician when assigned. Must be able to obtain and maintain a Top Secret clearance. U.S. Citizenship is required.
Typical Materials, Tools and Equipment Used- Materials worked on: electric motors, generators, transformers, switchboards, controls and other electrical equipment.
- Materials worked with: wire, tape, solder, conduit, insulators, fuses, switches, relays, screws, bolts, lubricants, insulating varnishes, lighting fixtures and other repair and replacement parts and supplies.
- Tools used: electric hand tools, soldering irons, wire strippers, blow torch, chain tongs, wire pullers, hickeys; wire gauges, measuring instruments (ammeters, voltmeters, watt meters, ohmmeters, wheatstone bridges), program logic controls.
- Equipment used: power tools such as drill presses, hack saws, pipe benders and threaders; soldering furnaces, coil winding machines; block and tackle, scaffolding, ladders, safety belts.
- Knowledge of automated facility controls and ability to operate an automated facility using computer equipment for monitoring, adjusting settings and responding to alarm conditions.
- Four‑year apprenticeship through IBEW or equivalent; knowledge to interpret/read electrical schematic drawings; excellent troubleshooting skills.
- Experience on electrical motors, transformers, switchboards, controls and high‑voltage equipment; familiarity with power tools and lifting equipment (OJT on PALDs, forklifts, walk‑behind lifts, scissor lifts, JLG lifts and working at heights).
- Medium voltage and/or substation experience desired.
