TEMPORARY PARKS WORKER I (CASUAL SEASONAL – Job Code 9176)
Seasonal non-benefited employees are limited to working no more than six (6) consecutive months and no more than 900 hours in a fiscal year (July 1 - June 30).
The City of Sunnyvale is currently recruiting for Parks Worker I who, under general supervision, performs a variety of unskilled, semi-skilled and skilled tasks in the construction, repair and maintenance of park and open space facilities, structures and grounds. This position requires a high school diploma or GED equivalent, some heavy manual labor experience and a Class C driver's license with a safe driving record.
Responsibilities (illustrative)
- Perform a variety of unskilled duties including litter removal and custodial tasks (sweeping, mopping, buffing, waxing), and maintenance and repair of park buildings and furnishings.
- Irrigate, mow, weed, trim and fertilize lawns and landscaped areas; plant, water and maintain vegetation; trim and prune bushes.
- Prepare and maintain athletic fields and related facilities; open and maintain skate park.
- Repair and replace irrigation systems; modify irrigation schedules as necessary.
- Clear debris and leaves; rake or use power blowers to clear walkways and park/recreational facilities.
- Perform basic construction, carpentry, plumbing, and painting tasks; clean and restock bathrooms; load trimmings and trash for disposal.
- Perform rough concrete work; repair concrete pads, pathways and walls.
- Apply herbicides, fungicides and pesticides in a safe and effective manner.
- Install, inspect and repair playground equipment, picnic tables, barbecues and related equipment; refer to appropriate staff for further attention.
- Troubleshoot and perform minor electrical repairs to light fixtures and related equipment.
- Plant, maintain and remove trees and shrubs; maintain annuals and perennials.
- Operate equipment involved in park maintenance (e.g., mowers, tractors, dump trucks, loaders, concrete saws, routers, air compressors, jackhammers).
- Fertilize and aerate turf; mow, trim and edge lawns and greens.
- Identify and resolve or report hazards; maintain maintenance records.
Working Conditions
Position requires sitting, standing, walking on level, uneven and slippery surfaces; bending and reaching; lifting up to 100 pounds; acute hearing; and the ability to operate equipment. Exposure to fumes, dust, chemicals, biohazards and air contaminants. Work may involve ladders, power tools, motorized vehicles, confined spaces and inclement weather. Some accommodations may be available for qualified individuals.
Education and Experience
Graduation from high school or equivalent; AND some experience in heavy manual labor.
Knowledge of
- Common hand tools, equipment and materials used in construction and maintenance of park facilities.
- Safe work practices.
- Principles and practices of customer service.
Ability to
- Perform routine and semi-skilled tasks in maintenance and construction activities.
- Perform heavy physical labor and learn semi-skilled carpentry, electrical and plumbing work.
- Understand and carry out oral and written instructions; learn to safely operate various equipment.
- Provide excellent customer service to the public and City staff; establish positive working relationships with employees, other agencies and the public.
- Communicate effectively, orally and in writing; exercise initiative and good judgment; work independently or as part of a team; meet deadlines; and observe safety principles.
Willingness to
- Wear a uniform and personal protection equipment.
- Travel to various City locations and be available for on-call, call-back, irregular hours, shifts and weekends.
Desirable Qualifications
- Municipal work experience.
- Qualified Applicator Certificate for Pesticides (State of California).
- College-level courses in Horticulture, Landscape Construction and related fields.
- Tree Worker's Certificate.
Licenses/Certificates
Possession and continued maintenance of a valid Class C California driver’s license and a safe driving record.
