TEMPORARY GROUNDS WORKER (CASUAL) (Class Code: 9129)
Note:
Casual non-benefited employees are limited to working no more than 25 hours per week and no more than 900 hours in a fiscal year (July 1 - June 30).
The City of Sunnyvale is seeking self-motivated, energetic, responsible individuals interested in temporary employment to assist in the maintenance of public parks and open space. May include, but are not limited to, the following:
- General cleaning of parks, including litter pick-up and emptying of garbage cans
- Perform basic building maintenance and janitorial tasks (depending upon assignment).
- Learn to operate equipment including mowers, blowers and line-trimmers, as assigned.
- General cleaning of parks, including litter pick-up and emptying of garbage cans, as assigned.
- Provide customer service for park users.
- Abate vandalism and hazard.
- Clean drainage ditches and culverts.
- Perform other routine maintenance assignments.
Position requires sitting, standing, walking, crouching, stooping, squatting, reaching, crawling, twisting and climbing in daily activities. The need to lift and carry tools, equipment and supplies weighing up to 75 pounds is also required. Incumbents work outdoors, in inclement weather, and the position may also require climbing. Some requirements may be accommodated for otherwise qualified individuals requesting accommodations.

The minimum qualifications for education and experience can be met in the following way:
A high school diploma or tested equivalent, AND some experience in construction and/or maintenance laborer experience.
Knowledge- Basic construction practices
- Basic safety practices and procedures
- Performing unskilled and some semi-skilled construction work
- Operating hand and power tools, equipment and light trucks
- Basic maintenance and repairing of tools
- Understand and follow verbal instructions and procedures
- Communicate effectively with co-workers and the public
- Follow oral and written instructions
- Prioritize multiple tasks
- Work independently
- Work outdoors in any weather conditions
- Must be available to work between the hours of 4 a.m.
- 7 p.m.; weekend shifts are possible.
- Paid or volunteer experience in landscaping/gardening
Possession and continued maintenance of a valid California Class C Driver’s License and a safe driving record.
