Founding Forward-Deployed ML Engineer#### Location Sunnyvale### About this role About Tessel  Tessel conducts rigorous, independent evaluations of medical imaging AI systems.

We focus on bridging the gap between benchmark performance and clinical reliability by analyzing how models behave in real-world settings — where they generalize, where they fail, and what uncertainties remain.

We serve as an independent evaluator that both healthcare institutions and AI vendors trust to characterize, stress-test, and explain model behavior under real-world conditions.

The role  You work directly with medical imaging companies ahead of FDA 510(k) or De Novo submissions. You own customer engagements end-to-end: running meetings, defining evaluation questions, leading investigations, and delivering evidence that materially affects go/no-go decisions.

You combine practical ML skills with customer-facing judgment and scoping discipline. Your focus is delivering decision-grade evidence reliably under time pressure.

Compensation  Competitive salary plus meaningful early-stage equity, reflecting the autonomy and company-level impact of the role (typically ~1–3%, depending on experience and scope of ownership).Qualifications  About you  Demonstrated history of non-trivial machine learning or analytical work (research, industry, or equivalent)  Evidence of deep technical engagement — e.g., meaningful projects, publications, systems built, or difficult problems solved  Strong empirical ML instincts — able to design investigations, not just train models  Comfortable working with messy real-world data and imperfect ground truth  High analytical ownership in Python (data → analysis → defensible conclusions)  Able to reason about model behavior, failure modes, and uncertainty  Sound judgment under ambiguity  Clear and confident communicator of technical findings  Bonus  Experience evaluating, validating, or debugging real-world ML systems  Familiarity with robustness, failure analysis, distribution shift, or interpretability  Exposure to medical imaging, healthcare ML, or other safety-critical domains  Experience working directly with customers or cross-functional stakeholders
