Primary Function of Position
The Future Forward group within Intuitive Surgical is searching for a Senior Mechanical Engineering Technician focused on the mechanical design of next‑generation surgical robot instruments. This role offers the opportunity to join a small, innovative team during early product development. The Senior Mechanical Engineering Technician will support mechanical and research engineers in developing new products, taking ideas from R&D engineers and building fully functional prototypes with minimal supervision.
EssentialJob Duties
- Build and refine medical device components and catheter assemblies, providing input for catheter assembly.
- Assist with all aspects of early prototype builds, including procurement of materials, inspection, rework, assembly, troubleshooting, and repair.
- Assemble prototypes per engineering design and instructions.
- Fabricate and modify components using standard prototyping and manufacturing equipment.
- Debug and perform performance testing of engineering prototypes.
- Assist engineers in benchtop and excised tissue lab evaluations of prototypes.
- Collect, record, and report test results.
- Prepare prototype instruments and accessories for benchtop testing and pre‑clinical lab evaluations, organizing, overseeing, and collaborating with other groups.
- Create prototype test and assembly fixtures and provide input for design of production fixtures.
- Provide input for protocols and reports for engineering, qualification, and verification studies.
- Setup, organize, and maintain engineering lab and equipment.
- Document assembly procedures and train other technicians on assembly.
- Assist in knowledge transfer to other groups or teams.
- Minimum 8 years’ experience supporting a mechanical engineering group in a product development organization.
- Associate of Science degree or equivalent work experience.
- Hands‑on skills and knowledge in prototyping and manufacturing methods, including soldering, wire and cable stripping, use of rotary tools, drills, small hand tools, and adhesive bonding.
- Knowledge of catheter materials and manufacturing processes including laminating, braiding, bonding, flaring, and tipping.
- Manual dexterity to assemble small components, with microscope or similar magnification.
- Knowledge of medical‑grade adhesives.
- Ability to inspect components using metrology equipment (calipers, micrometers, vision systems, CMM).
- Computer skills in Microsoft Office required;
Solid Works experience desirable. - Excellent organizational skills.
- Able to work independently.
- Strong design learning and application of new technology.
