Camp Director (Recreation Specialist – Job Code: 9327)

City of Sunnyvale is seeking self‑motivated, energetic, and responsible individuals for summer employment to supervise recreation programs serving youth 5‑12 years old. The programs will be held across various parks and schools throughout the city.

Hours

Casual non‑benefited employees: max 25 hours per week and up to 900 hours per fiscal year (July 1 – June 30). Seasonal non‑benefited employees: max 6 consecutive months and up to 900 hours per fiscal year.

Position Overview

The summer camp runs June 15 – Aug. 7, Monday‑Friday, 8 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. Mandatory Camp Staff Training is held June 8 – 12.

Essential Job Functions
  • Organize and lead recreation activities including arts and crafts, sports, and games.
  • Supervise children and teen volunteers on field trips, swim days, special events, and all activities.
  • Oversee, mentor, and assist in training counselors in daily job functions of the programs.
  • Take attendance and assist with record‑keeping.
  • Issue, maintain, and store equipment and supplies.
  • Interact and communicate effectively with children, parents, caregivers, volunteers, and city staff.
  • Ensure safety and well‑being of program participants and teen volunteers.
  • Plan, purchase supplies, train, conduct staff meetings, and supervise staff.
  • Prepare newsletters, calendars, and assist with planning and implementing summer staff training.
  • Interact with the public.
  • Supervise or support staff/volunteers independently in the absence of the Recreation Coordinator.
  • Complete mandatory training hours by attending scheduled trainings or obtain approval for alternative dates.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Working Conditions

Position requires regular sitting, standing, walking, reaching, kneeling, bending, squatting, stooping, grasping, repetitive hand movements, fine coordination, and near and far vision when reading reports and using a computer. Acute hearing is required for customer service. Lifting, dragging, pushing, and pulling objects up to 10 pounds may be required.

Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Two (2) years or two (2) summer seasons of experience in a specific program area (recreation, after‑school, health & fitness, or related field) or population (youth, adults, older adults, special population).
  • Minimum age 18 years.
  • Valid American Red Cross Lifeguard/First Aid/CPR/AED certificate (course may be taken after hire).
License / Certification

Possession of a valid California Class C driver’s license and a safe driving record at the time of hire and maintained thereafter.

Desirable Qualifications
  • Spanish, Mandarin, or Farsi bilingual.
  • Experience interacting with the public.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Experience with staff/volunteer supervision.
  • 32 semester or 48 quarter units completed in Recreation, Education, Kinesiology or closely related field.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Publisher, PowerPoint, Outlook).

  • Selected candidates are invited to an interview, followed by a camp assessment day for program assignments.
  • Background check, medical exam, and fingerprinting are required prior to hire.
  • Pre‑employment drug test and random drug and alcohol testing may be required for positions covered by Department of Transportation regulations.
  • If hired, proof of education must be submitted (original diploma or transcripts). College degrees earned outside the U.S. must be evaluated by a credential evaluation service at the applicant’s expense.
