The Facility Technician position works in the Port's Industrial Wastewater (IWW) Treatment Facility, along with other Facility Technicians, under the supervision of the Plant Operator. The Facility Technician helps maintain, diagnose, and repair the IWW treatment systems which are composed of mechanical, chemical and biological elements.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS- Perform preventative maintenance on treatment equipment
- Troubleshoot pumps, electric motors, controls, generators, filters, gear boxes, machines, and flow meters
- Operate equipment, backhoe, forklift, and vehicles
- Collect wastewater samples for testing
- Other duties as assigned
SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Basic understanding of the principles of electricity
- Comprehension of computer SCADA systems and PLC systems
- Familiar with electronic controls and instrumentation
- Basic understanding of the chemical and biological components of treatment
- Repair and troubleshoot switches, outlets, lights, VFDs, PLCs, controls and instrumentation
- Read and understand construction drawings, specifications, flow diagrams, equipment manuals, O&M Manuals, and technical documents
- Safety practices and procedures applicable to industrial wastewater treatment facility maintenance and repair
- Basic computer skills, knowledge in creating and using spreadsheets and word processing software
- Ability to manage time between various tasks and multi-task with efficiency
- Communicate effectively, both written and verbal
- Ability to work independently or as a team with little to no supervision
- Ability to follow verbal and written instructions
- Ability to read and write in English
- High School Diploma or GED
- Two (2) plus years’ experience in wastewater treatment, general construction or plant maintenance
- Two (2) years of college or technical school preferred
- Valid Washington State Driver’s License
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Rotating, on-call duties assigned after probationary period, to include weekend
- Subject to 24-hour call back, for emergency conditions
- Position requires mobility, bending, stooping, and turning large valves
- Working in confined spaces and off ladders or lifts
- Standing for long periods of time
- Work is performed both indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions
- Travel to meetings in or out of town may be required
- Must be physically able to perform the essential functions of the job including, but not limited to, the ability to properly lift up to 50 pounds and walking long distances per day on uneven terrain and concrete
