About the Safeguarding Team:

Our dedicated team is committed to creating a secure and supportive environment, ensuring that everyone involved with our club feels safe and valued.

At the Academy, we implement robust safeguarding policies tailored to protect our young athletes. We conduct regular risk assessments and provide tailored training for coaches and staff, focusing on recognising and addressing potential safeguarding concerns.

Working closely with other teams, we ensure that safeguarding measures are seamlessly integrated into all activities. Our aim is to protect our young talents so they can thrive on and off the pitch in a nurturing environment.

The Opportunity:

As a Matchday Safeguarding Officer, you are the frontline guardian of safety and well-being within your designated area of the stadium,
exclusively on home matchdays
. You’ll be the go‑to person for any safeguarding concerns or incidents that arise, ensuring they are recorded accurately and swiftly referred to the Designated Safeguarding Lead. Your proactive approach helps create a safe environment where everyone can enjoy the match with confidence.

Your role also involves actively observing how colleagues interact with children, young people, and vulnerable groups, providing support to uphold the highest safeguarding standards. You’ll play a vital part in safeguarding reviews and audits, helping to shape continuous improvements that keep our stadium a welcoming, secure space for all—specifically during our home fixtures.

Above all, your professionalism and discretion are key—you’ll handle sensitive information with the utmost confidentiality. Supporting inclusivity, you’ll work alongside the Disability Access Officer to address any access concerns, while assisting with matchday activities like mascot appearances and ball assisting. Your dedication ensures a safe, inclusive, and positive experience for everyone attending on home matchdays.

What We Ask For:

We are looking for someone with proven knowledge of safeguarding across diverse communities and settings. You’ll have experience building strong relationships with key stakeholders and working with children and vulnerable adults in busy, demanding environments. Availability to work on home matchdays is essential.

You should possess excellent communication, active listening, and conflict resolution skills, with a calm, empathetic approach. A strong understanding of safeguarding legislation, equal opportunities, and a child-centred mindset is important. The role requires a positive attitude, attention to detail, and a commitment to delivering a safe, inclusive experience for all attendees.

An Enhanced DBS from Sunderland AFC is required.
