Job Description & How to Apply Below

Come and be part of our exciting journey! Sunderland Museum and Winter Gardens is embarking on an ambitious £13.6m redevelopment of its much‑loved museum at the heart of the city. With £5.2m secured from the National Lottery Heritage Fund (NLHF), this transformative project will deliver major changes to the ground floor, including:

  • A new front entrance from Mowbray Park
  • Two new collection galleries featuring revitalised displays and interpretation
  • Welcoming social spaces for visitors
  • A vibrant community engagement hub, The Growing Space

All of this will be supported by a four‑year activity plan packed with exciting events and initiatives designed to reach deep into our communities.

Led by the Senior Manager – Museum Redevelopment and supported by the museum senior team within the wider Cultural Service, we are now recruiting for a Community Engagement Officer.

Key Responsibilities

The Community Engagement Officer will lead outreach initiatives across the wider community to increase participation in museum activity, build knowledge and skills, and expand the audience base. The role will address barriers faced by communities hesitant to engage, and work proactively to build confidence around access and engagement. A core responsibility is delivering outreach sessions in schools, colleges, and other cultural and community settings.

During the closure period, while the development works take place, this position will maintain continuity of service and foster new partnerships. Additionally, the officer will contribute to the council’s wider cultural service priorities and outcomes.
