Motor Vehicle Technician

Core Responsibilities

  • Inspect and service vehicles to the highest standards, reducing the likelihood of unscheduled work or breakdowns.
  • Specialist vehicle knowledge of several vehicle manufacturer types in the market, including light goods vehicles and light HGVs up to 7.5 tonnes; most fleet up to 5.5 tonnes.
Key Duties and Accountabilities
  • Inspect and service vehicles as part of planned and unplanned maintenance.
  • Carry out comprehensive electrical, mechanical and hydraulic diagnosis of vehicle systems.
  • Maintain own skill levels and stay aware of current and future technology used in vehicle maintenance.
  • Liaise with line managers on long‑term vehicle concerns and ensure completion of work.
  • Keep work area and protective clothing clean, tidy and fit for purpose, upholding the company image.
  • Observe a personal duty of care for equipment and resources used.
  • Carry out road tests on vehicles when required.
  • Communication
  • Communicate clearly, concisely and professionally in oral and written form with customers, colleagues and suppliers at all levels.
  • System and Policy Responsibilities
  • Be fully conversant with computerised fleet management systems to enable accurate input of vehicle repair information.
  • Carry out comprehensive diagnostic work on vehicle systems.

    Salary: £35,019 - £41,380 (plus unsocial hours payment (21%))

    People Responsibilities
  • Develop professional relationships with operational crews and management.
  • Cover the team leader role as required (e.g. annual leave).
  • Financial Responsibilities
  • Ensure repairs balance high safety standards with good value for money.
  • Ensure parts booked out are linked to a job card in the fleet management system.
  • Working Conditions
  • Operate on a shift pattern averaging 37.5 hours per week, 4 days on / 4 days off.
  • Shifts are 12 hours long, operating from 06:00-18:00 or 12:00-00:00.

    Essential
    Work Experience / Achievements
    • Experience maintaining Cars, CDVs, Passenger Service Vehicles and Goods vehicles up to 7.5 tonnes.
    Knowledge / Educational Achievements
    • Fully qualified motor vehicle technician.
    • Recognised level of certification such as City & Guilds Motor Vehicle Technician, NVQ level 2 or equivalent.
    • Specialist knowledge of motor vehicle electrical systems & mechanical components.
    • Comprehensive knowledge of computer‑based vehicle diagnostic systems and ability to analyse information to determine the most appropriate repair option.
    • Ability to diagnose other vehicle faults without diagnostic equipment.
    • Knowledge of vehicle legislation & Health & Safety legislation and ability to demonstrate required PPE.
    Desirable
    • MOT testing certificate
    • Level 3 NVQ / C&G
    • NEBOSH certificate
    • Knowledge of tail lift systems, their operation and repair
    • LOLER testing experience
    • Experience of working with a Vehicle Fleet Management System
    • Experience of vehicle carnation systems
    • Experience of working in a fleet management environment
    Other
    • Full UK manual driving licence.
    • C1 driving licence entitlement*

    * If you don't have a C1 entitlement on your licence, you will be asked to complete the test within 12 months of your appointment. You will be able to access a salary sacrifice scheme to pay for this.
