General
Summary:
Under general supervision assists in ensuring that the district Vision, Mission and Goals are achieved. The Route Coordinator will be responsible for planning school bus routes and assigning students to buses utilizing manual methods and/or the Department computerized routing system. Responsible for creating and assigning routes to students for their safe transportation to and from school and school activities within established regulations and guidelines alongside the Transportation Department.
Functions
- Responsible for the completion of the annual audit of routes of South Carolina Department of Education (SCDE) reports.
- Coordinate with the local GIS office and BCSD Technology department to ensure information flow of data to ensure routing efficiency.
- Remain informed of routing improvements and best practices; provide consultation and advice with other district administrators and staff as needed.
- Analyze data pertaining to vehicle capacity, timing, road systems and safety concerns in order to develop school bus routes and schedules.
- Establish and monitor bus routes, including special programs; adjust routes as necessary during the school year; field test schedules and routes; determine mileage of routes.
- Solve issues such as overcrowding on buses or balancing loads to meet bell schedules.
- Work with Department staff to solve challenging bus assignment issues, such as routing for all students including students with special needs, specialty programs, McKinney-Vento or out-of-zone students.
- Review bus stop requests and processes; approve or deny requests appropriately.
- Use routing and mapping software to answer questions and to plan and adjust school bus routes and stops; maintain transportation routes on the website.
- Provide routing support to District administrators/supervisors as needed.
- Obtain, gather, and organize pertinent data as needed and input into a usable form utilizing word processing and spreadsheet software.
- Research, develop, and recommend new procedures and programs for routing.
- Communicate effectively and professionally with district administrators, the public, school staff, parents and personnel from other departments or agencies; provide information to the public and respond to general inquiries pertaining to school bus stops and routing.
- Maintain records of routes, drivers, mileage, daily reports, etc.; prepare reports as necessary; assist supervisor with filing and preparing reports and distributing route information.
- Assist with special projects to analyze changes in bell schedules and school zone attendance boundaries.
- Perform operator level diagnostics and repairs on routing software as well; prepare operator training manuals and guides.
- Serve as primary contact with routing vendor.
- Supervise the work of assigned routers for Special Education, Extended School Year, and other District-wide programs.
- Attend conferences and trainings to increase knowledge of school bus transportation and routing.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Associates Degree in Geographic Information Systems/Science (GIS), Geography, Computer Science, Business or related field or a minimum of two years verified logistics experience in K-12 student transportation, public transit, supply chain and logistics management, or trucking routing and planning; or comparable experience in a related field. Experience in K-12 student transportation is highly desired. A valid South Carolina Driver's License is required.
A current commercial driver's license (CDL) and school bus driving experience is preferred. Candidates lacking a CDL must be willing to earn a CDL. The candidate must be willing to operate a school bus.
Proficiency in GIS software (i.e. Edulog, Versatrans, Traversa, or school bus routing software) is desired. Proficiency with standard office software applications including Access, Excel, Word and PowerPoint is required. An aptitude for learning district policies, transportation procedures, state regulations and laws pertaining to student transportation and special needs transportation and Versatrans/Traversa school bus routing software is required. Knowledge of federal and state laws pertaining to K-12 student transportation and familiarity with the roadways and communities.
