Title:
Instructional Specialist for Secondary Education
Primary Function
Under limited supervision, the Instructional Specialist for Secondary Education provides professional leadership, consultation, and support to the district’s secondary educators, ensuring the implementation of effective classroom instruction. The specialist also supports administrators in achieving district goals, assists schools in obtaining necessary instructional materials and resources, and performs related professional and administrative duties as assigned. This position reports to the Director of Instruction, K-12.
Qualifications- Valid teaching certificate in the appropriate subject area(s) required.
- Master’s degree in education, curriculum and instruction, or a related field preferred.
- Minimum of five years of successful teaching experience at the secondary level required. Demonstrated knowledge of secondary curriculum, instruction, and assessment practices. Strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively with diverse groups of stakeholders.
- Provide professional leadership, consultation, and support to the District’s 6-12 teachers to ensure the delivery of effective classroom instruction and programming.
- Maintain current knowledge of secondary education trends and new or pending legislation to ensure compliance with external regulations and to communicate pertinent information to administrators and staff.
- Serve as a liaison to the Director of Instruction and the Executive Director of Academics, collaborating in the planning, development, coordination, and evaluation of district-wide instructional initiatives for grades 6-12.
- Maintain accurate records and statistics regarding trends, needs, and successes at the secondary level to inform planning and decision-making.
- Ensure all 6-12 teachers are able to effectively teach state standards-based lessons.
- Facilitate the preparation and continuous updating of secondary curriculum documents, including local school improvement plans.
- Compile and analyze data to assist in preparing reports for local, state, and federal agencies and to support planning and evaluation of the secondary education program.
- Collaborate with appropriate staff to review student enrollment, staffing needs, and assignment of duties, ensuring compliance with state and local regulations.
- Recommend courses of study and/or support services to be offered, based on survey data and assessment results.
- Assist in evaluating the effectiveness of secondary programs and initiatives through analysis of student data, including benchmarks, common assessments, NWEA MAP, EOC, and SC Ready assessment results.
- Identify, promote, and facilitate staff development opportunities for secondary teachers based on assessment data, classroom observations, and the implementation of new courses of study.
- Ensure that secondary curriculum materials, instructional strategies, and classroom procedures are aligned to maximize student achievement and success.
- Serve as a consultant to 6-12 teachers, instructional coaches, and school administrators on the development and implementation of secondary curricula and special programs, including the evaluation and selection of teaching materials.
- Share effective instructional strategies with teachers individually and through in-service workshops; model lessons; observe teachers in the classroom; provide feedback and recommendations for improvement; and offer ongoing support through professional development opportunities.
- Provide testing support by distributing standardized test preparation materials, analyzing assessment results, and facilitating related meetings and workshops to enhance student outcomes.
- Offer guidance, leadership, and support to 6-12 teachers to promote effective instructional practices and student achievement.
