Base pay range$48.00/hr - $84.50/hr
Responsibilities- Responsible for Laboratory Operations for section and/or assigned shift.
- Ensure that all personnel policies and practices are followed.
- Assist in formulating goals and objectives for the Department.
- Establish and implement policies and procedures in collaboration with associated Departments throughout the organization.
- Interviews, hires, disciplines, and terminates personnel as appropriate.
- Prepares and administers performance appraisals.
- Oversees work schedules to assure adequate staffing and workflow completion.
- Authorizes overtime as necessary.
- Prepares various reports for assigned committees and Management as requested.
- Assumes administrative responsibilities for other areas as communicated by site Manager.
- Acts as a technical resource for instrumentation.
- Evaluates new procedures and instrumentation for implementation.
- Oversees technical performance of the section ensuring accuracy and optimal turnaround times.
- Develops and reports workload statistics to the Site Manager.
- Reports Quality Control, Proficiency Testing and Quality Improvement issues to site Manager as requested.
- Maintains procedures according to SOP.
- Ensures result review is performed and associated problems are resolved.
- Responds to telephone inquiries after hours.
- Ensures technical manuals are in compliance with regulatory agencies.
- Performs duties of testing personnel as needed.
- Cover open shifts as needed.
- Assists Manager in preparation of budget (salaries and hours, supplies and purchased services).
- Monitors and justifies monthly variances.
- Identifies areas for cost savings within the section.
- Recommends and justifies capital purchases; assists in justification of new/replacement instrumentation.
- Recognizes and communicates revenue opportunities.
- Performs cost analysis for new or existing tests as appropriate.
- Oversees purchasing of supplies.
- Implements and maintains an Inventory Control System to minimize cost and improve productivity.
- Seeks cost-effective mechanisms to purchase supplies.
- Evaluates new instrumentation/equipment/product purchases as directed by the Site Manager.
- Attends hospital-wide committees and staff meetings as scheduled.
- Communicates laboratory and site issues to site manager.
- Chairs regularly scheduled staff meetings.
- Promotes shared values and governance throughout the organization.
- Initiates and responds to incident and occurrence reports; communicates findings and solutions to site Manager.
- Meets with vendors and technical representatives regarding operational needs.
- Interfaces and cooperates with other lab management personnel.
- Aids in developing protocols to satisfy regulatory requirements.
- Works with coordinators and management to ensure compliance.
- Provides remediation as indicated.
- Participates in in-services as required.
- Updates and monitors laboratory compliance with regulatory agencies (CAP, CLIA, JCAHO, FDA).
- Coordinates self-inspections and onsite inspections with Manager.
- Ensures QA/QC logs are reported, reviewed, and maintained as required by regulatory agencies.
- Ensures all staff are in compliance with OSHA, Fire, Disaster, Right to Know and Infection Control policies.
- Maintains a safe environment per hospital policies and regulatory requirements.
- Demonstrates knowledge of and practices departmental safety procedures, including safe handling of hazardous materials.
- Demonstrates practice of institutional, patient, and personnel safety procedures.
- Completes mandatory annual training programs as defined by Human Resources.
- Must meet current CAP requirements for a laboratory supervisor.
- Bachelor’s degree in medical technology, or in a physical, chemical, biological, or clinical laboratory science with 5+ years in high complexity testing in CLIA/CAP environments.
- ASCP, AMT or defined equivalent required or eligible; must pass exam within one year or when eligible per ASCP standards.
- Minimum of five (5) years clinical laboratory experience.
- Two (2) years of laboratory supervisory experience preferred.
- Proven experience in a clinical laboratory or healthcare setting with understanding of laboratory operations and regulatory compliance.
- In-depth knowledge of Clinical Laboratory principles, methodologies, and devices.
- Familiarity with regulatory guidelines (e.g., CLIA, CAP) and accreditation processes.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills; effective troubleshooting.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate with stakeholders and deliver training.
