Overview

This position is responsible for proficiency in all areas of a retail operation. It serves as the second in charge of operations to the Store Manager, providing leadership and direction to the store team, ensuring a positive customer shopping experience, and performing operational activities throughout the store. The role promotes a safe and productive work environment for all team members, customers, and vendors, and trains staff on application of policies and procedures.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Maintain regular and predictable attendance.
  • Work scheduled shifts and be available for varied hours, days, nights, weekends, and overtime as dictated by business needs.
  • Uphold and promote a safe and productive work environment by following and enforcing policies and procedures.
  • Take the initiative to support selling initiatives (TEAM):
    • Thank the Customer
    • Engage with the customer and/or pet
    • Advise products or services
    • Make it Memorable
  • Assist Store Manager in store operations, including driving sales and profit, customer loyalty, planning, prioritization, and delegating daily tasks.
  • Support team management functions: counseling, hiring/staffing decisions, scheduling, training, and development.
  • Serve as store leader during the Store Manager’s absence.
  • Order live goods and store supplies.
  • Train and certify Team Leaders in receiving processes.
  • Lead and coach team members on store operations to grow sales and profitability.
  • Implement merchandising initiatives, expense control, profit/loss management, and shrink reduction.
  • Execute basic, promotional, and seasonal merchandising activities.
  • Perform opening/closing procedures.
  • Transport and make deposits to bank.
  • Assess store conditions and assign duties.
  • Organize and prioritize workflow using the daily planner.
  • Recover merchandise and participate in mandatory freight process.
  • Perform price change activities.
  • Resolve customer complaints/issues and ensure a positive customer experience.
  • Adhere to loss prevention standards and respond to alarm calls as needed.
  • Communicate with team members on job functions, responsibilities and financial goals.
  • Operate cash register/computer supervising cash handling procedures.
  • Assist team members on appropriate application of policies and procedures.
  • Ensure safety and well‑being of live animals; sanitize and maintain holding tanks as required.
  • Complete all related documentation.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
  • Previous retail leadership experience.
  • Experience with pet/live animal knowledge strongly preferred.
  • Supervisory experience preferred.
  • Minimum 18 years of age and a valid driver’s license.
  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred; associates must read, write, and count accurately.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills or Abilities
  • Ability to perform and execute principal responsibilities of team members.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and conflict resolution.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Pet/Live Animal, pet food, pet product knowledge strongly preferred.
Working Conditions
  • Indoor operation with moderate noise; indoor floors and outdoor lots typically hard surfaces.
  • Shift lengths vary; generally at least 4 hours and may exceed 8 hours.
  • Promotes a safe and productive workplace and adheres to company safety training and guidelines.
Physical Requirements
  • Frequently lift or reach merchandise overhead.
  • Stand, kneel, twist, crouch, squat, bend, stoop, and climb ladders frequently.
  • Move throughout the store for an entire shift.
  • Safely access all store areas including selling floor, side lot, stock area, and register area.
  • Operate store equipment such as computer, cash register, and other equipment.
  • Read, write, and count accurately for documentation.
  • Communicate effectively with team members and customers.
  • Process information through the point‑of‑sale system.
  • Complete required training and certification.
  • Travel as required for district needs.
  • Drive or operate a vehicle for business needs.
  • Position is non‑sedentary.
  • Maintain physical and mental stamina for quick, safe movement across store and outdoor areas.
  • Operate all equipment safely, accurately, and effectively to provide high‑level customer service.
