Responsibilities
Meet patients preoperatively and verify documentation and consent forms
- Assist with patient positioning, prepping, and draping per surgical standards
- Confirm that instruments and equipment are ready and functional
- Participate in team briefings to review the surgical plan
- Provide direct assistance to the surgeon (e.g., retraction, hemostasis, suturing)
- Use advanced techniques and instruments to support precision during procedures
- Maintain sterile technique and adhere to infection control protocols
- Anticipate the surgical team's needs to facilitate procedural flow
- Assist with patient transfer to recovery
- Complete, accurate surgical documentation
- Participate in post-op debriefings and quality improvement discussions
- Current Surgical Assistant license issued by the Texas Medical Board
- Certified by a recognized body (ABSA or NSAA required)
- Active BLS or ACLS certification (AHA or equivalent)
- Minimum 2 years’ experience in surgical assisting (hospital or outpatient setting)
- Skilled in multiple surgical specialties, including cardiovascular, orthopedic, general, neurosurgery, and minimally invasive procedures
- Strong communication and teamwork skills; proficient in medical terminology
- Detail-oriented and able to manage high-pressure situations effectively
