NYU Langone Hospital—Suffolk is a 306-bed medical center serving residents of eastern Long Island. The hospital facility includes the Knapp Cardiac Care Center, a modern ambulatory surgical pavilion with services such as women’s imaging, a sleep laboratory, and bariatric surgery. The Provisional Level 2 Trauma Center provides comprehensive care for traumatic injuries. The Stroke Center is designated as a Primary Stroke Center by the New York State Department of Health, with neurologists available 24/7.

Position Summary

We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Registered Nurse — 2 North/South — Part-Time — Day Shift — NSG-2 North/South — Part-Time — 7a-7:30p. In this role, the nurse provides professional nursing care in accordance with physician treatment plans to support the comfort and well-being of patients and their families. The nurse assesses patient needs, plans and implements the treatment plan, observes progress, and documents pertinent observations.

The nurse works collaboratively with the interdisciplinary health team, directs the delivery of nursing care by other team members, and participates in the orientation of new employees.

Job Responsibilities
  • The registered nurse collects patient health data by involving the patient, family, and other health care providers.
  • Performs initial assessment based on the patient’s presentation.
  • Records relevant data on the nursing component of the Interdisciplinary Admission Assessment.
  • Demonstrates awareness of the needs of each age group or culture served, including patients with disabilities.
  • Performs ongoing assessments as established by department policy and as warranted by the patient’s condition.
  • Incorporates discharge planning into the admission process.
  • Analyzes assessment data to identify problems and determine expected outcomes individualized to the patient.
  • Demonstrates ability to combine theoretical knowledge and clinical expertise to anticipate and plan for patient and family care needs.
  • Identifies actual or potential problems and validates them with the patient, family, and other health care providers.
  • Identifies cultural, ethnic, and spiritual aspects of patient/family dynamics related to care.
  • Recognizes patient comfort and pain management needs that may impact the plan of care and outcomes.
  • Identifies knowledge deficits for the patient and/or family.
  • Communicates expected outcomes to the patient, family, and other health care providers to promote continuity of care.
  • Develops a plan of care with prescribed interventions to attain outcomes.
  • Collaborates with patient, family, and appropriate health care providers in developing the plan of care.
  • Formulates a family-centered plan of care aligned with physician treatment plans; integrates cultural, ethnic, and spiritual aspects of care.
  • Incorporates teaching and learning principles based on identified learning needs and level.
  • Assists the patient and family in identifying and securing services to address health-related needs.
  • Communicates the plan of care to the patient, family, and other health care providers to promote continuity of care.
  • Documents the initial plan of care and provides updates as required.
  • Establishes realistic goals, sets priorities, and uses time efficiently.
  • Implements the plan of care and performs appropriate patient monitoring.
  • Adapts nursing procedures to meet the needs of the individual patient.
  • Provides education to the patient and family using the educational assessment.
  • Identifies hazards to patient safety and maintains a safe environment.
  • Works collaboratively with other team members to implement interventions.
  • Assigns or delegates tasks in accordance with the state nurse practice act and the skills of the caregiver.
