Performs responsible human support and paraprofessional work assisting classroom teachers by working with individual students or small groups; does related work as required. Work is performed under the regular supervision of the classroom teacher and/or building administrator.
This is light work requiring the exertion of up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects, and some medium work requiring the exertion of 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects;
work requires stooping, kneeling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities;
the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, and noise.
- Assisting the classroom teacher with instructional activities; reinforcing material already presented through special efforts and repetitions; facilitating daily instruction and activities.
- Assisting classroom teacher(s) in performing specific duties as assigned or undertaking specialized tasks.
- Working with individuals or small groups to reinforce material introduced by the teacher.
- Preparing materials for learning and other instructional activities.
- Assisting with large group activities.
- Guiding independent study and other work assigned by the teacher.
- Reporting student problems to the teacher and assisting with student behavior and classroom management.
- Performing cafeteria, hall, recess, and/or bus duties.
- Assisting with lunch, snack, cleanup, lavatory, clothing and washup routines.
- Providing classroom coverage and instructional support for teacher absences.
- Participating in in-service training programs as assigned.
- Performing related tasks as required.

Skills and Abilities
General knowledge of the practices, methods and techniques used in classroom teaching; ability to maintain confidential files and information; ability to deal effectively with students and teachers; skill in the use of classroom and instructional equipment; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with teachers, parents, students and the general public.
Education and ExperienceSuccessful completion of 48 hours of college credits or passing the Para Professional Test and prior experience working with children.
