Position Summary: This position is responsible for steel fitting equipment, parts, interiors and exteriors of ships, and shipyard buildings at our vast, 63-acre facility.

Detailed Description:
  • Follow directions with intermittent supervision and interpret blueprints, drawings, and specifications to plan work.
  • Lay out, measure, and verify materials and work pieces using squares, rulers, tapes, and marking tools.
  • Align, fit, position, and secure parts manually or with hoists/cranes, using clamps, jacks, and braces.
  • Set up and operate fabricating equipment (brakes, rolls, shears, torches, grinders, drill presses) to cut, form, and assemble metal components.
  • Tack-weld, weld, grind, cut bevels, and finish parts, including straightening or correcting warped components.
  • Move and assemble large units, erecting ladders/scaffolding and constructing templates/fixtures as needed.
  • Inspect work for conformance, diagnose issues, and troubleshoot equipment and process problems.
  • Maintain proper storage and care of tools and equipment and perform miscellaneous tasks as assigned.
  • Demonstrate essential physical and cognitive abilities (steady hands, close vision, coordination, spatial reasoning, stamina).
  • Maintain reliable attendance, follow all safety, environmental, and organizational policies, and perform energetic waterfront work.
Physical Job Demands:
  • Carry 50 lb tool buckets up to 500', including stairs, ladders, 34" spaces, and 18"x24" lightening holes.
  • Pull 50 lb loads 50' vertically using a hand-over-hand technique (twice daily).
  • Use grinders, torches, and welders in confined spaces with 14 lb lifts and 20 lb overhead force.
  • Lift and carry 50 lb welding feeders up to 100', navigating stairs, 36" frames, and tight openings.
  • Pull hoses to job sites, climbing over 36" framing and crawling through lightening holes.
  • Operate chain jacks, porta pulls, and porta power, lifting 48 lbs and pushing/pulling up to 150 lbs.
  • Use hammers overhead or while kneeling/squatting with up to a 20 lb grip.
  • Lift and carry 65 lb strong backs and 12x12 blocks as needed.
  • Move 43--60 lb materials (cutouts and steel plates) daily over distances up to 100' with obstacles.
  • Perform fine-tool tasks requiring up to 10 lbs grip/pinch, plus bilge fairing with 22 lb lifts and 48"

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Knowledge of materials and methods involved in construction and repair
  • Ability to read basic blueprint reading
  • Knowledge of how to read a tape measure
  • A self-starter who can work with minimal supervision on an 8 for 8 basis
  • Ability to work in inclement weather
Desired Qualifications:
  • 3+ years of experience preferred
  • Prior shipyard experience a plus
  • Bilingual language skills (oral & written) a plus
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment
  • Knowledge of materials, methods, and the tools involved in construction / repair
