Function / Position Summary

To design and provide lessons aligned to the board adopted elementary curriculum that empowers students to be critical thinkers, engaged readers, skillful researchers, and ethical users of information and technology. To collaborate with staff in creating a well-organized, relevant, and welcoming library resource center that supports all stakeholders.

Job Duties / Responsibilities
  • Teach the board-adopted Library and Media Curriculum using district library resources in alignment with the Elementary Integrated Curriculum.
  • Collaborate with the library para educator to plan and prepare for upcoming lessons and foster an inclusive, respectful, and welcoming environment where the learning community feels valued and encouraged to explore their interests.
  • Collaborate with the library para educator to circulate materials to students and staff using the district-supported Library Information System and following district guidelines.
  • Provide direct instruction (in-person, hybrid, asynchronous and/or synchronous) in library skills, including research, digital literacy, media, and the safe and ethical use of information.
  • Provide opportunities with STEAM learning tasks.
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers to design and deliver standards-based instruction.
  • Promote and encourage a culture of self-directed inquiry and participatory learning while modeling ethical use of information and technology, digital citizenship, for students and staff.
  • Provide equitable access to a culturally relevant and well-managed collection that reflects and meets the learning community's needs.
  • Promote reading for enjoyment, information, and inquiry.
  • Plan and implement programs promoting a love of reading and learning, such as storytelling, library events, or themed activities.
  • Collaborate with the local community library to increase access.
  • Maintain a physical and virtual space using the district learning management system that meets the learning community's needs.
  • Collaborates on researching and ordering library materials (print, equipment, and supplies) that support the curriculum and reflect the diversity of the school's demographic population.
  • Maintain accurate records of library usage, student engagement, and resource circulation.
  • Maintain confidentiality of student, staff, and department information within the school and community.
  • Uphold library, school, and district standards/procedures/policies.
  • Provide administration-directed instructional support or intervention if content-specific minutes do not meet the special instructional minutes target. This would be designated as "owed time."
  • Other duties as assigned
Education

Digital Literacy Teacher in Monolingual Buildings

  • Professional Educator License (PEL) with appropriate Elementary endorsement required
  • Library Information Specialist or Media K-9 or PK-12 endorsement preferred.
Education - Dual Language

Dual Language Digital Literacy Teacher in Dual Language Buildings

  • PEL with appropriate Elementary and Bilingual Education-Spanish K-9 or PK-12 endorsement required.
  • Library Information Specialist or Media K-9 or PK-12 endorsement preferred.
  • Bilingual - Spanish/English (written/verbal)
Experience / Knowledge
  • Teaching experience is preferred
  • Experience working in a library is preferred
  • Knowledge of the standards: AASL, I-SAIL, Computer Literacy, ISTE, and Illinois State Standards
  • Highly skilled in digital tools and systems
  • Knowledge of district-adopted curriculum
  • Knowledge and use of Danielson's Performance Rubric for Teachers
  • Familiarity with a wide range of reading, research, and technology materials
  • Understanding of the intentional promotion of biliteracy and the use of authentic, culturally relevant text in English and Spanish
  • Strong interpersonal, collaborative, and instructional skills
  • Knowledge and use of MARC records, cataloging standards, collection development practices
  • Expertise in print, nonprint, and electronic information resources, library management systems, current and emerging instructional technologies, and knowledge of current educational trends and teaching practices
  • Understanding of the Learning Commons/Makerspace theories, instructional practices, and materials
Physical Demands
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs with proper technique
  • Repetitive hand/arm/shoulder movement
Terms of Employment
  • This is a nine-month ETA position (184 work days)
  • Salary and benefits as established by the Board of Education
  • May require traveling to multiple sites

Because this is a new role for the 25-26 school year, teachers will be required to attend a full-day training.
