Overview
Under the supervision of the Aquatics Director or Designee, the Head Lifeguard is responsible for the safety and well being of participants using the Old Colony Y Aquatic facility.
Responsibilities- Program Responsibilities
- Arrive on deck, in uniform, ready to open pool safely, promptly and at the scheduled time.
- Schedule all lifeguards to ensure safety of pool facility.
- When acting as a lifeguard/covering breaks, act as a role model guard and embody your expectations of the greater lifeguard team.
- Plan & perform ongoing in-services, VAT drops and drills to ensure daily rescue readiness of lifeguard staff.
- Ensure all in-services and drills are logged and uploaded to Teams.
- Ensure all depth markings, life jackets, and pool signage reflect Old Colony YMCA’s swim test policy.
- Consistently monitor lifeguards for rescue readiness & professionalism, including scanning patterns, 5-minute strategy, guard rotations, and proper guard placement to ensure clear view of each zone of coverage.
- Check to ensure all safety equipment is in place, functional and the branch emergency action plan can be carried out successfully. Report any problems in writing to the Aquatics Director.
- Report all accidents and incidents to supervisor on appropriate forms.
- Attend all staff meetings scheduled by supervisor and provide updates on observations, guard and facility feedback, etc.
- Adhere to opening & closing protocols following OCY approved checklists.
- Ensure management of pool set-up based on scheduled activities.
- Assist in moving lap lanes, swim testing, placement of depth markers/buoys, and proper fitting of PFDs.
- Minimum 18 years old
- 1-3 years related experience
- Current Lifeguard certification in either Red Cross, YMCA or Ellis and current certification in CPR, First Aid, AED and O2
- Must cross-over to Ellis Lifeguard Certification within 30 days and YMCA cross-over within 3 months.
- Ellis or American Red Cross Lifeguard Trainer preferred
- Must be able to perform all physical tasks of a Lifeguard as well as lift an adult male from the pool onto the pool deck.
- Complete program specific and employee orientation training by required timeline.
