Overview
Position: T&R Center Licensed Practical Nurse
At Stony Brook Medicine, the LPN provides nursing care to assigned patients under the direct supervision of the RN or other supervisor and accepts delegation to meet patient/family needs. This title is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS).
Program DetailsFor the duration of the NY HELPS Program, this title may be filled via a non-competitive appointment, which means no examination is required but all candidates must meet the minimum qualifications of the title. Agencies may recruit and hire employees by making temporary appointments. In May 2024, a temporary NY HELPS employee performing satisfactorily may be converted to permanent non-competitive status with an official probationary period beginning.
At a future date (within one year of permanent appointment), it is expected that non-competitive employment status will be converted to competitive status without an examination. Employees may take part in promotion examinations for which they are qualified.
- Collect data through observation and communicate information to assist the RN and/or provider in patient assessment and care planning.
- Participate as a member of the health care team and accept delegation from the RN/assigned supervisor and provider to meet patient/family needs.
- Deliver care in accordance with the patient care plan, policies and procedures, and principles of relationship-based care.
- Maintain excellent communication, mentor and teach, and participate on committees or projects.
- Plan and manage patient care according to each patient’s needs.
- Interview patients and record medical history and physical condition.
- Obtain patient vital signs (pulse, blood pressure, temperature, respiration).
- Provide routine care for patients and review medical charts.
- Accompany patients to their rooms and assist physicians and registered nurses.
- Communicate with patients and their families.
- Perform standard diagnostic procedures including EKG, phlebotomy, venipuncture, PFT, and Doppler.
- Prepare specimens for lab courier and administer medications.
- Provide wound care and prepare/administer injections and/or enemas.
- Assist with patient comfort and monitor catheters.
Working conditions may involve exposure to infectious disease, blood, body fluids and/or tissue, and other unpleasant elements such as accidents, injuries and illness. May be exposed to varying unpredictable, emergency and crisis situations. Occasional irregular hours and pressure due to multiple calls and inquiries. This position is classified by OSHA as Category 1.
QualificationsRequired: Must possess or be eligible to obtain a license to practice as a Licensed Practical Nurse in New York State.
Preferred: Acute care, phlebotomy, EKG, and/or IV experience.
Onboarding and Compliance- As part of the onboarding process, a copy of your current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is required. If the BLS certification expires within 90 days of start date, you will attend BLS training during nursing orientation.
- Acute care is defined as medical services for illnesses that are short-term, intense, and require vigilant monitoring and quick problem identification.

- Failure to comply may delay start date or revoke the offer. The hiring department covers any applicable examination fees.

Some roles may include additional pay such as location pay, night/evening shift differentials, and geographic pay. Salary offers are determined by validated experience and may be adjusted accordingly.
